American Firefighter PTSD PTSI - Carla Lundblade, MS, Clinical Therapist "PTSD/PTSI Proof" Without Risking Your Career! So resilient, and maybe even optimistic? You know EXACTLY who I'm talking about. Everyone looks up to them.

Have you ever wondered how some of the toughest firefighters in the world seem so amazingly calm, cool, and collected? They seem like they can handle anything, can go the distance effortlessly in their careers, and have wonderful family lives, too. Who are these people?! You have to think that these “tough” firefighters must be stronger than average or are cut from a different, better mold, right? Well, what if that actually wasn't the case? What if these “tough” firefighters had a secret weapon, and they acquired it by doing something a little differently, learning something a little extra, and saying “yes” to special training like this training being offered to you right now?

Consider calling or texting the first responders you know today and telling them how much you appreciate them. Each one is dealing with experiences and memories you can't imagine, and they would really enjoy your support. They will probably act nonchalant and like it's no big deal, but trust me, it's huge!

Then: “I grabbed a bottle of bourbon, my gun, and left the house. I searched for a cornfield or some place away from people. I just drove off into the countryside looking for a spot to pull over, drink the bottle, and end it all."

Now: “I trusted the treatment process and it worked. I’m a different person now. I actually look forward to going to work. I have my sense of purpose again and my confidence is back. I’m a compassionate human being, who chooses to dedicate my life to helping as many people as I can. It makes me feel good to think my story could be an inspiration to help others. I hope my story can help. It makes me feel trusted that my experience mattered, my troubles mattered, and my process to getting well was a positive thing. I want to keep that positivity going!"

My message to my Brothers and Sisters: "Don’t wait until you’re mentally broken. You might feel fine. I felt I was mentally fit but I wasn’t. You don’t have to wait to learn these tools they teach. They can keep you from getting to the point I had reached, where I felt there was no other option but su***de. You might feel fine, and you might be fine, but it’s a long career. It doesn’t hurt to have a therapist’s number in your phone, someone you can turn to."

-Tony Cate, current lieutenant with 25 years of service. Baltimore, MD.

Can I be blunt with you? Firefighter su***de deaths are 30% higher than other work-related deaths and show no signs of decreasing (Powers, 2019).

That means that su***de poses the largest danger to you, even more than the physical hazards you face on the job everyday. Digging deeper, what this really means is that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or the newer term, Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI), is the #1 danger firefighters face today.

It turns out that PTSD/PTSI training is statistically more likely to protect your brain from a fatal injury than your helmet. It will be hard not to think about it that way the next time you put on your lid. Or every time you see a coworker reach for theirs. The question becomes, “Without PTSD/PTSI training, are you doing everything possible to protect yourself and those who depend on you, both in the workplace and at home?

1) There are over 1,000,000 American firefighters.
2) Almost 50% of them report having thoughts of su***de.
3) 16% (that’s over 160,000 firefighters) have actively attempted su***de — not just thought about it, not just planned it — but actually attempted it and, most often, without anyone else knowing.
