Can I still get a decompression if I’m experiencing inflammation? In most cases, surgery should wait until inflammation has settled. This may mean allowing time for the disease to quiet down or using treatment like Tepezza. Reducing inflammation leads to safer surgery and better outcomes.

How often should you have an eye exam? Your eyes can tell us more than you think, and Thyroid Eye Disease can start quietly, but the damage can become serious if it’s missed.

Regular eye exams help us:
- Catch changes early
- Protect your vision
- Reduce discomfort and irritation
- Prevent long-term complications

If you have a thyroid condition and notice changes like dryness, pressure, double vision, or eye bulging - don’t wait. Early care can make a real difference.

Will Thyroid Eye Disease ever go away on its own?

If symptoms are mild, flare-ups can come and go over time, but when TED is more severe, it rarely just disappears without treatment. The goal of treatment isn’t just symptom relief - it’s to bring the disease into a stable, non-progressive phase.

Patient feedback like this means more than I can put into words.

TED affects far more than just the eyes, and being able to support patients through every stage, medically and emotionally, is a responsibility I’m truly grateful for. Thank you to those who share their stories and place their trust in our care.

Advanced Thyroid Eye Disease can be complex, but thoughtful, staged planning can make a dramatic difference. This patient underwent comprehensive surgical correction, all in one afternoon, to reposition the eyes, support the midface, and restore a more natural appearance.

There are two different steroids that have, in the past, been used to manage some of the symptoms associated with TED. Prednisone is a systemic corticosteroid taken orally, and Methylprednisolone is a stronger corticosteroid that’s typically given IV in high-dose pulses. There have been a notable number of side effects with these steroids when used to target the inflammation associated with TED, and I don’t personally recommend long term use for most TED patients. I will at times, however, use them post-operatively to help treat inflammation, but again, it’s important that they’re not used for long periods of time, and especially as a primary treatment option.

Undergoing a second round of Tepezza isn’t uncommon, and you should also know that there’s no greater risk of side effects when experiencing this second round of treatment. But, in saying this, if you did experience some side effects during your first round, you are likely to experience the same side effects again.

Tepezza is proven to have a major beneficial impact on TED symptoms, so schedule a consultation with my office to talk about what options might be right for you.

This Thyroid Eye Disease patient was experiencing blurry vision, and red and watery eyes. As you can see from the before photo, he also had significant hollowness in his mid face. We performed a bilateral decompression, as well as other cosmetic additions, which not only improved his vision and resolved his symptoms, but also rejuvenated his appearance.

Can you get aesthetic treatments while being treated for TED? Botox can be safely used, and in some cases can help with the pain and pressure associated with TED. But fillers are something you need to be extremely cautious about as they tend to attract water, which can worsen the swelling associated with TED. I often have to remove pre-existing filler when treating TED patients. So talk to your physician about any aesthetic treatments you’re looking to undergo while being treated for TED, and they can advise you on if they’re appropriate for you.
