Ear Reconstruction After Traumatic Injury

This patient suffered a traumatic injury that resulted in the loss of a portion of the helix (the outer rim) of the ear, creating the appearance that a piece had been bitten off.

To restore the natural shape and structure of the ear, a multi-stage reconstructive procedure was performed. The reconstruction required rebuilding both the front and back skin surfaces as well as the missing cartilage that normally lies between them.

Stage 1: Reconstruction of the Helical Rim
First, a skin flap was carefully raised from behind the ear. Then, a small piece of cartilage was harvested from the opposite ear and used to bridge the missing segment of the helical rim. Once the cartilage graft was secured in place, the previously raised skin flap was draped over it to restore the front contour and provide soft tissue coverage.

Stage 2: Back Side Restoration
Approximately two months later—once the new tissue had developed an adequate blood supply—the flap was divided from its original connection. This allowed us to elevate the ear and recreate its natural projection. The exposed back surface, now raw, was then covered using a skin graft, also taken from the opposite ear.

This two-stage technique allowed us to reconstruct the ear with a natural appearance and contour, restoring both function and symmetry.
