Nerve pain, or neuropathic pain, can be caused by various factors such as a direct injury to the nerve, which may be from a herniated disc in the spine, a stretch injury, or peripheral nerve compression like carpal tunnel syndrome. It can also result from indirect damage to the nerve from metabolic conditions like diabetes.
The pain does not usually originate from the local area, but from somewhere along the course of the nerve supplying that area. If the pain originates from damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system (spinal cord or brain), it is classified as central neuropathic pain. If it originates from damage to the nerve pathways outside of the central nervous system, it is classified as peripheral neuropathy!
