A young and active 44-year-old female came to see me after having neck pain for several years. She failed several rounds of physical therapy and injections treated. We discussed several different treatment options and she underwent a two level cervical disc replacement. After undergoing surgery, she’s back to work with minimal pain in one week.

Spinal stenosis (or narrowing) is a common condition that occurs when the small spinal canal, which contains the nerve roots and spinal cord, becomes compressed. This causes a “pinching” of the spinal cord and/or nerve roots, which leads to pain, cramping, weakness or numbness. Depending on where the narrowing takes place, you may feel these symptoms in the lower back and legs, neck, shoulder or arms.

The word "kyphosis" describes a type of curve in the spine. A kyphotic curve is normally present in the thoracic spine (the part of the spine in the chest area). A kyphotic curve looks like the letter "C" with the opening of the C pointing towards the front. Though the thoracic spine is supposed to be curved, if the curve in a person's thoracic spine is more than 40 to 45 degrees, it is considered abnormal - or a spinal deformity.

A compression fracture is defined as a fracture that occurs because of compression of the bone in the spine. Most compression fractures occur in vertebrae that have been weakened by osteoporosis or other diseases that weaken bone, such as cancer. The fracture occurs when the bone has deteriorated to the point that it can no longer support the spinal column in daily activities. Watch the video at the link, or contact me to learn more.

What’s dropped shoulder syndrome? Cervical radiculopathy, a condition caused by inflammation or damage to a nerve root in the cervical spine. Cervical radiculopathy may be caused by muscle spasms, cervical disc hernias, or age-related wear-and-tear of the spinal discs located in the neck. Dropped shoulder syndrome may also be caused by weak or too-long neck muscles, which elevate the trapezius and other muscles in the shoulder, causing compression of the cervical nerve root. Contact Dr. Nourian today to learn more and discuss treatment options.
