High-protein goals are everywhere, but performers often do not realize how protein supplements can affect the voice.

If your intake goes up and your water does not, you may end up under-hydrated, which can make the vocal folds feel stiffer and the voice fatigue faster. Add in dairy based protein (the “coated throat” feeling for some singers) plus reflux or bloating from powders and bars, and suddenly your nutrition plan is showing up in your sound.

Swipe through for what to watch for, and how to protect your instrument.

High-protein eating can be great for your goals, but performers often miss how it can show up in the voice.

- hydration demand goes up
- dairy protein can change throat “feel”
- digestion can impact breath support

Save this for your next performance week, and support your instrument the same way you support your training.

Breath support is more than a “diaphragm” cue. It’s controlled airflow that helps you sing with less strain, more endurance, and clearer sound.

If you run out of air fast, feel throat tightness, or fatigue quickly, breath coordination may be the missing piece. Save this for practice.

Try this at home: laryngeal massage for the muscles under your chin. Your tongue and suprahyoid muscles work overtime when you’re voicing, and tension builds up fast. The prayer hands technique is a simple way to release it. Fold your fingers, keep your thumbs out, and let gravity do the work against your knees or a desk. Swivel your head, explore the tight spots, and stay where it feels good.
