A hydrocele is a layer of fluid that surrounds the testicle. Just like the lungs, the testicle normally has fluid around it for lubrication, so it often doesn’t hurt.

Everyone has a small amount of this fluid, but when it increases, the testicle can feel larger. While this isn’t always a problem, a hydrocele that appears suddenly should be evaluated, as it can be related to infection or irritation from a tumor.
