Why surgeons test your blood. Most people don't realize that plastic surgeons can actually detect if you've been smoking through a simple blood test. The cotinine test reveals ni****ne use from the past four weeks, which is crucial because smoking dramatically affects surgical healing. That's why most plastic surgeons require patients to quit smoking 4-6 weeks before any procedure - it's not just a suggestion, it's essential for safe recovery and optimal results.

Weight loss methods create different results. West Hollywood patients who've used GLP-1 medications often ask about the differences they're seeing compared to surgical weight loss. Here's what's fascinating - the type of weight loss actually changes your tissue quality. Surgical patients lose weight more rapidly and experience some malnutrition, which affects how their skin and tissue respond. GLP-1 patients have a different tissue composition entirely. This is exactly why we're seeing such demand for customized body contouring approaches.

the surprising truth. Most people assume all doctors can perform any procedure, but here's what really happens behind the scenes. While having an MD technically allows a physician to attempt various procedures, the real gatekeepers are the accredited facilities and surgery centers. These institutions have rigorous privileging processes where they scrutinize every doctor's specific credentials before allowing them to operate. So when a plastic surgeon wants to perform breast augmentation or a tummy tuck, they must prove their specialized training and experience to each facility. This system protects patients by ensuring only properly trained surgeons perform complex procedures, even though the medical license itself doesn't specify these limitations.

Botched surgery nearly killed patient. A Brentwood woman's cosmetic procedure abroad turned into a nightmare when surgeons left her with open wounds and green discharge. Daily "treatments" involved cutting tissue with scissors while she was awake. She finally flew back to the US and went straight to the hospital. It took multiple surgeries, aggressive antibiotic treatment, and intensive care to save her from sepsis.

Surgery addiction warning signs. As a plastic surgeon, I've learned to recognize patients who may have body dysmorphic disorder - those who've had 20+ surgeries and still aren't satisfied. These patients often come to my Beverly Hills practice seeking "just one more fix," but no amount of surgery will address their underlying condition. Experienced surgeons know these cases require psychological support, not more procedures, because the patient will never be truly happy with surgical results.

Why 12-hour fasting before surgery. Most people think the standard 6-hour pre-surgery fast is enough, but anesthesiologists often extend this to 12 hours for a critical reason. When you eat certain foods, they can sit in your stomach much longer than expected, creating a dangerous situation during surgery. If any food remains in the stomach during anesthesia, it can come back up and enter the lungs - a serious complication called aspiration that can be life-threatening. Hollywood patients often ask about this extended fasting period when preparing for cosmetic procedures at my Beverly Hills practice. Beyond the immediate surgical risks, having food in your system can also interfere with proper tissue healing and wound recovery after surgery.

Liposuction myths exposed. A medical provider recently told me they needed liposuction after weight gain - but that's not how it works. Santa Monica patients often come to my Beverly Hills practice with similar misconceptions. Liposuction isn't weight loss surgery. It's body contouring for stubborn fat pockets that won't respond to diet and exercise. When patients understand this distinction, their expectations become realistic and their outcomes improve dramatically.

Flap necrosis risk every plastic surgeon worries about. As a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, I'll be honest about what keeps me up at night. The more procedures you perform, the higher the statistical chance something could go wrong. While most wound healing issues are minor and manageable, flap necrosis is the complication that truly concerns us. The flap is the skin overlying the surgical area, and when it doesn't heal properly, it creates serious complications. It's not about being pessimistic - it's about being realistic with patients about surgical risks and ensuring they understand what we monitor for during recovery.

Insurance coverage after weight loss. Many people don't realize that insurance often covers skin removal surgery after major weight loss because it becomes reconstructive rather than cosmetic. When you have excess skin causing rashes, infections, or limiting daily activities like walking and lifting your arms, some insurance providers recognize this as a medical necessity. Whether it's after GLP-1 medications or weight loss surgery, the loose skin throughout your body can significantly impact your quality of life, making coverage possible.

body contouring surgery. When choosing a plastic surgeon, asking about case volume isn't just smart—it's essential. Hollywood patients often ask me about this when visiting my Beverly Hills practice. Some surgeons might do a body contouring procedure once a year, maybe three times total. We perform at least two to three cases every week. That frequency means we're constantly refining our technique, anticipating complications, and delivering consistent results. Experience isn't just about years in practice—it's about repetition and focus.

A patient came to me using a walker and cane, struggling with excess skin that was severely impacting her mobility and quality of life. Three months after her procedure, she walks in freely - no assistive devices needed. She looks ten years younger and her entire persona has transformed. Sometimes that excess tissue really does impede quality of life, and seeing this dramatic change is where the surprise comes. It's incredibly rewarding when you actively make such a difference in someone's life.
