Congratulations 🎊 and kudos 👏👏👏to for sharing exactly the right message about rehabilitating the abdominal wall after surgery.

Core strengthening is key to reducing or controlling incisional hernias. Over ½ off all stomas (colostomy is worse than ileostomy) will have some sort of hernia associated with them. Strengthening the core muscles will help temper that trend.

Here is her original post:

Rebuilding after hernia repair isn’t about “bouncing back” — it’s about rebuilding properly.

I’ve had complications and nerve damage, so my return to core exercises post-surgery is slow, intentional and guided by rehab principles. Right now it’s breathwork, gentle activation, pelvic stability and deep core engagement before I even think about planks or heavy lifting.

If you’re recovering from hernia surgery, abdominal surgery or dealing with post-operative core weakness, please know this: rushing it will set you back. Controlled, progressive strengthening is what protects your repair and rebuilds real strength.

I’ll be sharing exactly how I’m approaching safe core strengthening, rehab exercises and returning to training after surgery starting from the begining through my own experience

Last year around this time, I had to miss the annual meeting in beautiful Santa Barbara 🌴🌊. Life had other plans 😔—I was facing the very real risk of losing my home due to the Palisades 🔥 and couldn’t attend a meeting that means so much to me. This is a society I’ve been part of since 1998 (back when I was a resident!) and one I was honored to serve as its first female President 💪👩‍⚕️.

Fast-forward to THIS year ✨ and I couldn’t be happier to be back at the Southern California Chapter meeting of the 🎉. Reconnecting with friends 🤍, seeing former trainees 🙌, and diving into important surgical topics 🧠🔬—it feels so good to be here.

Come along with me! I’ll be live tweeting highlights and updates live from the meeting 📲👀💬
