I recently had the pleasure of joining Stephanie Pilha on Leadr pocast to discuss what has been my life’s work — elevating the science and standards of hernia care.

As a surgeon deeply focused on this highly specialized field, I shared my experiences advancing sex-specific hernia mesh design to address the unique anatomical needs of men and women. This initiative is part of my broader mission to push hernia repair beyond traditional methods and towards safer, more patient-centric solutions.

This conversation dives into the intersection of surgical expertise and MedTech innovation — where meaningful change happens.

It’s so important that certain medical devices meet the needs of all potential patient populations. For too long, surgical instruments, devices, and even hernia mesh have been developed for male surgeons and the male patient anatomy.

It was a pleasure to be part of the expert panel held at the DeviceTalks West meeting this year. The panel focused on innovations in medical devices to address diverse anatomies. Hence my gender based mesh designs, for which we hold 9 patents!💪🏻

Tailored solutions can bridge critical gaps in clinical research and medical device design, driving equity for women and diverse populations.

Headed to the Device Talks West conference to showcase how my patented mesh designs can improve hernia care for both men AND women.
⚠️Because women deserve to have a more tailored approach to their care.
⚠️And too many men are being hurt by our current mesh designs.

I’ve posted this thousands of times. Because it’s true. And it’s what I experience with my patients on a daily basis. Folks, hernias deserve 👉more attention 👉more care👉more respect👉more research. For too many years doctors and industry have treated hernias like a lowly disease process not worthy of much investment in time and attention. I hope I am doing “the Lord’s work,” as says, by promoting hernias to the public and to my healthcare audience. The goal is to improve the diagnosis, care and outcomes of hernias. Because, it’s not just a hernia. … and now this important concept is trademarked 😝

My Op-Ed just got published. 😆 I’m super excited for you to read it. It summarizes all you need to know to initiate an evaluation of your inguinal hernia.

👉👉Women, be wary of hernias. Yes, you can get hernias. And yes, they can cause more problems than in men!

8 Granted patents worldwide, and counting!

Our goal is to help reduce hernia mesh related complications by improving design in a gender specific manner.

Hopefully one day we can say no to mesh related chronic pain, neuralgia, testicular pain and chronic pelvic pain, in males and specifically in females.

We are super excited about a new proprietary scoring system we validated that predicts whether an inguinal hernia repair will benefit from hernia repair to treat their groin pain.

This scoring system can:
* help reduce unnecessary inguinal hernia repair in patients with groin pain for other reasons
* help identify patients with enigmatic pelvic pain which may be due to inguinal hernia. This is particularly important among women diagnosed with chronic pelvic pain.

Our Research Associate, Dr Desmond Huynh, did an excellent job presenting this at Western Surgical Association annual meeting today.
