Speech & language development is not a linear evolution. It has a series of key stages. Language explosion is one of those stages 🗣👶🥰

Language explosion occurs when a child’s vocabulary increases at an incredible rate over a short period of time. When a child’s vocabulary reaches 50 words, they are able to learn more words quickly.

Before a language explosion, learning new words takes time. Children may learn 2 or 3 words per week. During the explosion, they can learn up to 4 to 20 new words a day!

Even as early as 1 year old, we can begin identifying red flags for developmental language disorder 👶🗣🧠

A developmental language disorder, or DLD for short, is a very common disorder that means a child has difficulty using and/or understanding language. Having trouble with language means that children with DLD may have difficulty following directions, using grammar, speaking sounds, socializing with peers and/or adults, talking about emotions, and learning in school.

There is no known cause of DLD and it occurs in about 1 out of 15 children.
