A mother’s perspective on hope, answers, and transformation

I recently came across a post from Doja Cat where she shared that she suspects she may have lipedema.

She described noticing symptoms starting around puberty that many patients report, like disproportion, nodularity, and what can appear to be persistent “cellulite.”

In clinic, we see this often: many women first recognize patterns in their own bodies and begin asking questions. That self-awareness and advocacy are often the first steps toward getting answers, which is why conversations like these matter.

Lipedema is still widely misunderstood and often overlooked, and when people with large platforms speak openly about their experiences, it helps raise awareness and encourages others to seek guidance.

🔎Markings to the Thigh Unit

It’s important when marking prior to surgery to recognize where the Lipedema is and isn’t. Lipedema creates a distinct band of fullness that wraps around the lateral thigh and often extends into the pelvic girdle and upper buttock.

Treatment here is highly strategic. The goal isn’t to flatten, it’s to sculpt. We carefully address the lipedema tissue along the lateral thigh and upper buttock while preserving the lower buttock to maintain its natural projection and shape. Over-treating this area can compromise contour.

By blending and reducing the lipedema band, we soften shadows and ledges along the upper buttock, creating a smoother transition and more defined silhouette. Effective lipedema reduction surgery is not just removal. It’s thoughtful contouring that respects form, balance, and long-term aesthetics.

🙋‍♀️ After developing lipedema symptoms at just 11 years old, my patient spent years navigating pain, progression, and limited mobility. A prior surgery with another surgeon in 2019 left her with an open wound, extensive scar tissue, and untreated areas, followed by six months of stressful recovery and wound care.

She came to me seeking a revision and now following surgery, she’s watched her legs soften and shrink, her skin retract, and her mobility improve. Getting dressed is easier and clothes fit differently.

Revision surgery requires precision, patience, and respect for already traumatized tissue. Just as important, it requires empathy. I’m grateful that she chose to place her trust in myself and our team and undergo this process again to reclaim her quality of life.

All too often, patients’ symptoms are dismissed as “anxiety” instead of being properly investigated. This pattern, often driven by implicit bias or gaps in medical knowledge, leads to delayed diagnoses, mislabeling, and patients carrying unnecessary blame and shame.

Unfortunately, as a result, many face worse health outcomes and a deep mistrust of the healthcare system. Awareness is the first step towards change. When we listen to patients and take their symptoms seriously, we create better care and better futures.

🔎 Lipedema and torso involvement are often more significant than people realize. It commonly extends from the p***c region to the inframammary fold, including the hips, flanks, back, and sides of the breasts.

If only the central abdomen or flanks are treated, fat can look disproportionate or shift to untreated areas like the upper back, leading to contour irregularities and loose skin.

That’s why a comprehensive, 360 degree approach matters. By combining liposuction to remove diseased tissue with J-Plasma for skin tightening, we can break apart fibrosis, improve overall contour, and avoid more invasive procedures like tummy tucks.

🙋‍♀️ Before her surgery, my dear patient, Ashley aka shared photos of her beloved grandmother, Patsy.

Despite Patsy’s smaller frame, there was clear disproportion in her calves, ankles, arms, and thighs, classic features of lipedema. She had lived her entire adult life without a diagnosis.

As the condition progressed, it affected her metabolism, mobility, and independence. In her later years, she relied on a wheelchair. Her final wish was simply to walk again.

Stories like Patsy’s and Ashley’s are why awareness and proper treatment matter, not just for patients today, but for the generations before and after them.
