🔎 Inflammation & Lipedema

Inflammation plays an essential role in immune defense, but when it becomes chronic, it can contribute to disease progression.

Over time, persistent inflammation can lead to fibrosis or thickened, scar-like tissue within the fat layers. This process can impair lymphatic flow, increase pressure in the tissues, and further exacerbate swelling and discomfort.

Management focuses on reducing this inflammatory burden through a comprehensive approach: targeted nutrition, supplementation, and in some cases, metabolic support such as GLP-1–based therapies. These strategies aim to support lymphatic function, reduce symptoms, and help slow progression.

I’m grateful for platforms that continue to elevate the conversation around lipedema and bring visibility to a condition that is still widely misunderstood and often overlooked.

Being featured in by Adrienne Matei () was truly an honor. This piece reflects real care and helps bring long-overdue attention to lipedema and the patient experiences that deserve to be seen and understood.

It also means a great deal to share more about Lipedema Society, the organization I founded to advance education, advocacy, and work toward integrating lipedema into medical school curricula within the next five years.

🔎 Lipedema doesn’t just affect fat tissue. It also impacts the lymphatic system, a critical part of the body responsible for fluid balance, waste clearance, and fat absorption.

When lipedema progresses, fibrosis and inflammation can congest the lymphatic pathways, impair drainage, and contribute to fluid buildup. Weakening of connective tissue may further disrupt lymphatic integrity, playing a major role in the development of lymphedema.

That’s why supporting the lymphatic system is such an important part of lipedema care. Preventive lymphatic care, decongestive therapy, and properly performed lipedema reduction surgery can all help improve lymphatic function and support better long-term outcomes.

I’m honored to be featured in , and grateful to for telling this story with such care and thoughtfulness.

In the article, Maria shares how speaking openly about lipedema led her to better understand both the condition and her own experience.

This is why visibility matters. When these conversations happen, people begin to recognize symptoms, ask questions, and seek answers they may have been missing for years.

🇮🇹 From The Roxbury Institute clinic to the top of the Florence Cathedral

2.5 years ago, my Stage 3 patient was limited by her Lipedema, experiencing many of the characteristic symptoms like pain and heaviness.

Now after her two surgery plan, she’s climbing 463 stairs, traveling the world, and enjoying life with her husband. This is what long-term outcomes look like. Not just physical changes, but restored mobility, and the ability to say “yes” to moments that once felt impossible.

When the underlying disease process is thoughtfully addressed, patients often regain the ability to participate more fully in daily life and travel, with less limitation and greater confidence in their bodies.

Outcomes like this are why comprehensive, patient-centered care matters. Comment 🥳 below to celebrate with her.

2️⃣ years after her Lipedema Reduction Surgery, my lovely 67 year old patient shared a powerful update that truly says it all.

Despite staying very active, she previously struggled with Stage 2 Lipedema, persistent heaviness, discomfort, and difficulty seeing any definition in her legs. Recently, she sent a photo wearing a pair of shorts she hadn’t been able to fit into for 15–20 years, and now after her surgeries, she can put them on comfortably.

Following her procedure, she’s not only seeing physical changes, but feeling them in her daily life. She feels stronger, more comfortable, and more like herself again.

Comment 🎉 to share in this milestone with her.

🙋‍♀️ Ashley’s Journey

Ashley’s first Lipedema Reduction Surgery was 2.5 years ago, and although she saw tremendous improvement after the 6-month mark, years later, she began to experience symptoms again. This is a very rare occurrence I see in only a small percentage of patients, when the lipedema is more active and aggressive.

The return of heaviness and tenderness led her to move forward with a supportive circumferential thigh surgery, where I removed an additional 10.5 liters of diseased fat and broke apart the remaining fibrosis.

Her earlier results are still providing real benefits today, proving that had we not moved forward with her initial surgeries, the disease may have progressed even more dramatically. I look forward to seeing her continued progress.

🔎 April 4 is Dercum’s Disease Awareness Day.

A condition that’s often misunderstood or misdiagnosed, Dercum’s disease is a rare disorder characterized by multiple, painful growths of fatty tissue

Dercum’s Disease impacts quality of life in ways most people can’t see, with persistent pain and limited understanding in the medical space. Awareness leads to earlier diagnosis, better support, and real change.

Today, we raise awareness, amplify patient voices, and push for better research, recognition, and care. If you or someone you love is living with Dercum’s, know you are not alone.

🔎 Metabolism plays a much bigger role in lipedema than many people realize.

Your metabolism is a complex system of chemical reactions that convert nutrients into energy and regulate how the body stores and uses fat.

In lipedema, this system becomes deeply interconnected with fat tissue and hormones. This creates a bidirectional relationship: Metabolism can influence lipedema progression, and lipedema itself can impact metabolic function.

Understanding this relationship is key to looking at lipedema as more than just a fat disorder. It’s a complex metabolic and hormonal condition.

Comment METABOLISM if you want to learn more about how our supplement program supports metabolic function.
