“What makes a fire burn is space between the logs, a breathing space. Too much of a good thing, too many logs packed in too tight can douse the flames almost as surely as a pail of water would. So building fires requires attention to the spaces in between, as much as to the wood. When we are able to build open spaces in the same way we have learned to pile on the logs, then we can come to see how it is fuel, and absence of the fuel together, that make fire possible. We only need to lay a log lightly from time to time. A fire grows simply because the space is there, with openings in which the flame that knows just how it wants to burn can find its way.“ ~Judy Brown

I love creating yoga classes that combine practical techniques & skill building with inspiration & investigation into our most authentic and heart-centered selves. This weekend we practiced “pull” focused flows that emphasized the action of pulling our hips up and back to downdog (balancing the “push” of hands and arms to lift ourselves up and back) and then we pulled back from effort into an extended yoga nidra guided meditation to ease all parts of our bodies into rest. I shared some favorite words by Rumi to invite an inner exploration of pulls and possibilities in our pause: “Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” I hope your Sunday silently and perhaps strangely pulls you to what you really love. 💚

I recommend and remind students to practice this in every class I teach. 👍 It’s the ultimate hip health hack which I brought back after living in Japan where I learned to love sitting on the earth. You can swear as you stand up hands free, just as I swear this a vital practice for wellness. Use props like walls and chairs to be safe and find the lift that supports you!

Avoid the couch at the end of the day and try relaxing on the floor instead

Happy Autumnal Equinox to our Sandy Pause Yoga family! 🤸‍♂️🍁☀️🌙 Five years ago today I took Rumi’s words that ‘life is a balance between holding on and letting go’ to heart and headed across the street to teach my first yoga class on neighbor Jen’s lawn.🧘‍♀️ It’s been a great ride with lots of opportunities to practice holding on and even more for letting go. The community we are creating together, rooted in warmth and welcome to all, is a reflection of your lovely and luminous light and I am so grateful for each of you. 💜 Join us for our 5th anniversary yoga class+potluck on Wednesday night 9/24, we’ll be indoors at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk this week and class starts at 6 pm.
