A Brown University study, led by Assistant Professor Yashaswini Singh, aims to explore the impact of private equity (PE) acquisitions of physician practices on healthcare accessibility, quality, and spending. This research, supported by the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation, is pioneering in assessing the "spillover effects" these acquisitions have on local market competitors and healthcare services. Singh's previous work indicates that PE acquisitions lead to increased healthcare spending and utilization, and this study will further investigate how these acquisitions affect the provision of care, particularly in the field of ophthalmology. The findings intend to provide empirical evidence on the market-wide implications of PE investments in healthcare, contributing significantly to policy discussions and the understanding of their effects on healthcare quality and access.
