“I’ve already tried traditional physical therapy and it didn’t help—why would this be different?”
I get this question a lot. And it's totally understandable.
And there are several parts to the answer.
Part one:
When you go through your insurance to a traditional physical therapy clinic, it depends on both the clinic and the practitioner you get assigned to.
Physical therapists undergo a very INTENSIVE but also very BROAD training.
We are prepared to work with people from as young as newborns to as old as you can get, high level athletes to unable to move from a bed, and people from very healthy to complex multiple medical conditions and complications.
We may work with conditions related to developmental delays, orthopedic (bone and joint) issues, neurological issues (like strokes and brain injuries), pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause & menopause.
In all sorts of settings -
home, hospital, skilled nursing home, clinic, gym, school system -each with it's own nuances.
We refine our skills after graduation through investing in continuing education and training specific to the areas or practice we either feel drawn to or find our selves working in.
So depending on what your therapist has invested their time and money studying and gaining more advanced knowledge, they may or may not be the best suited practitioner for you. Particularly in a general outpatient practice where schedules are filled as they open and not based on who's the best fit practitioner. Typically these are collaborative environments, when time allows, because as therapists we all want you to get better.
But if physical therapy in the past didn't help and your issue has been longstanding, you may need a practitioner with more experience and a higher level of expertise in working with someone like you.
If you're on the fence about giving yourself a second chance to deal with chronic or unexplained pain, wether with myself or any other practitioner, I hope this helps.
Stay tuned for part two of the answer if you want to know more.
