A tragic event in Boston yesterday should bring awareness to the potential risks of driving with underlying medical conditions. While it is not yet confirmed, sources are citing a history of seizures for the driver.

When giving talks about driving safety in the community, many are surprised to learn that in the state of MA, if you experience a seizure, syncopal event, or any other episode of altered consciousness, you are supposed to voluntarily surrender your license and refrain from driving until you have been free of episodes for a minimum of 6 months!

Now, most MD’s are great about educating patients on this law, but what if the MD isn’t made aware? On the other hand, of course breakthrough seizures and instances of LOC do occur, but let’s let this be an opportunity to remind our loved ones of the importance of discussing any forms of altered or loss of consciousness with their doctor. And don’t forget that when it is time to get back behind the wheel following a medical event, a comprehensive clinical driving evaluation is the gold standard for assuring safety and protecting against liability!

One of the most common myths about is that it’s only for older adults.

🧑‍🦼 There are approximately 18,000 new SCI cases each year.

🦿 Approximately 500,000 Americans experience limb loss or are born with a limb difference each year.

Many of these people are young.

What if they could return to driving independently? (Or earn their driver’s license in the first place!)

How would this impact their self-concept, employability, travel options, dating life, and engagement in occupations — like going to the skate park?

Driving is a valued IADL for people of all ages.

When you work with clients of ANY age, remember to bring up driving.

You may be the first clinician willing to help them find a specialist who can get them behind the wheel. You don’t have to know the specifics of adaptive equipment and licensing. Just connect them with an OT Driver Rehabilitation Specialist in the same way you’d connect them to a CHT.

You don’t need all the answers, you just need to be curious and brave enough to ask questions so your clients can get to the right specialists.

When you think of Driver Rehab services — remember that we serve people of all ages, not just older adults.

When every OT brings up driving with their clients, we make a massive impact!
