A tragic event in Boston yesterday should bring awareness to the potential risks of driving with underlying medical conditions. While it is not yet confirmed, sources are citing a history of seizures for the driver.
When giving talks about driving safety in the community, many are surprised to learn that in the state of MA, if you experience a seizure, syncopal event, or any other episode of altered consciousness, you are supposed to voluntarily surrender your license and refrain from driving until you have been free of episodes for a minimum of 6 months!
Now, most MDâs are great about educating patients on this law, but what if the MD isnât made aware? On the other hand, of course breakthrough seizures and instances of LOC do occur, but letâs let this be an opportunity to remind our loved ones of the importance of discussing any forms of altered or loss of consciousness with their doctor. And donât forget that when it is time to get back behind the wheel following a medical event, a comprehensive clinical driving evaluation is the gold standard for assuring safety and protecting against liability!
