Together we can build an anti-racist healthcare system. Exposed is a groundbreaking documentary that combines the stories of 19 Black, brown and migrant nurses and midwives to speak about their powerful experiences of racism before, during and after the pandemic. The documentary lasts 1 hour. Nurses are gathering on May 20th to discuss this very powerful film.

Using the analogy of a plant, the author invites us to look at our ecological conditions and change them together. She rejects pathologizing wilting plants that have weathered a traumatizing pandemic. Professor Miroslav Volf teaches the same ancient questions in a popular course at Yale. He's just co-authored Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most. In my curriculum for healthcare professionals and organizations, mattering is given the attention it deserves.

Healthcare was sick before the pandemic. The Brigham and Women's national research study was just published--it shows that across healthcare roles, including non-clinical roles, workers are experiencing burnout and intent to leave related to work overload. To hear individual perspectives, NPR's On Point just aired a segment on moral injury. I invite you to listen.

In our nation’s for-profit health system, more and more health care professionals say they're being forced to make choices that are bad for patients. Much like soldiers at war, clinicians now report suffering from “moral injury.”
