By outlining your preferences ahead of time, you maintain autonomy over your care and ensure decisions made reflect your values, not just the judgment of others. It also provides guidance and peace of mind for loved ones, reducing stress and uncertainty during difficult moments. A copy of California's Advance Health Care Directive can be found in all of our admit packets, but if you want to get a head start, they can be found online through AARP, UCLA Health, Stanford/PREPARE for You Care, and Kaiser Permanente or ask your local medical facility for a hard copy.

While you’re feeling sorrow, little moments of joy still matter. Watch a show that makes you laugh. Feel the sun on your face. Look through old photos to bring back happy memories. These moments won’t erase the pain, but they can help you find peace. (909)-281-2550 BearValleyHospice.com

A car can't run if you don't put gas in it; you have to fill your cup before you can fill others. Taking time for yourself or accepting help is not selfish or lazy; it is necessary during this time. It not only lightens your emotional and physical load, but also allows others the gift of supporting you in a meaningful way.

Grief doesn’t always wait until after someone is gone. You might be mourning the changes you’ve seen, the loss that’s coming, or the pieces of your life that already feel different. This is called anticipatory grief, and it’s a very real part of the journey.

Maybe that’s holding your loved one’s hand, playing a song they love, or sitting together in silence.
If your loved one can still talk, ask what matters to them in this moment. Share a favorite memory, say what’s on your heart, and listen. These conversations can be healing for both of you. And they don’t need to be long or deep to be meaningful.

Every year, we have a Celebration of Life to honor the patients we lost that year. It is healing for the families but also for us; we're able to see the families of past patients, share memories, and lend a shoulder for anyone in need. We paint rocks to honor them and their legacy. Families can choose to take the rocks home or let them reside in our rock garden. It was a beautiful celebration this past weekend and we look forward to connecting at the next one.

Grief is a complex emotion to work through, and it's hard enough to process on your own, let alone the toll it takes to continue with the demands of ongoing life. Bereavement is an intricate part of the hospice practice, and we are here for not only our patients but their families and loved ones. There are many other wonderful resources in this mountain community, depending on whatever issue you feel you need help with. You are not alone.

Whether it's pumping up with dance or flowing through yoga, find a workout you have fun with and are more likely to look forward to.

5-minute mini-workouts throughout the day add up, try to hit a minimum of 30 minutes daily.

Get your friends together for a group workout or head to a gym and check out a fun class, groups can keep it fun and hold you accountable.

Park further away from the door, take the stairs over the elevator, do calf raises while you do dishes, these are just a few ways to incorporate exercise into everyday tasks.

Try to pencil in a time that works for you each day to make it a habit, it can be first thing in the morning or after work in the evening, try to make it an obtainable time and if you miss a day don't beat yourself up, life happens, try to make it up the next day.
