Absolutely!! More than "things" new families can use actual support to adjust back to home life after having a baby. It can be hard to get the chores done, shower, adjust to not sleeping, etc. Women may experience new issues after their body just grew another human and need some help to regain muscle strength or alignment. Even better, go in together on some of these sevices with other friends or family members.

"In all cultures, the midwife's place is on the threshold of life, where intense human emotions, fear, hope, longing, triumph, and incredible physical power-enable a new human being to emerge. Her vocation is unique."

Birth is not neat and fast: it’s gritty and primal. But it’s nothing to fear, unless you also think we ought to fear women crying when they are sad or laughing when they are happy. If we stop viewing birth as an emergency – it’s NOT – then we can stop imposing anxiety on women about birth.

After you have a baby, people often say, "Let me know if you need anything!" And while this is a beautiful sentiment, it's hard for you, as a sleep-deprived parent, to even think about what needs doing other than simply surviving.

Your job is to rest, recover, bond with your baby, and establish a good breastfeeding relationship.

Before you have your baby, start making a list of things you can delegate to other people, and even ask people ahead of time to do them.

You might call your mom and say, "Mom, I'm making a plan for postpartum, and I'd love if it you could come and cook us dinner a 3 nights a week for a few weeks. We'll have someone grocery shop for us, so the fridge and pantry will be stocked. Is that something you could do?"

You might call several women in your neighborhood and arrange for them to watch your older child(ren) in the afternoons so you can shower and nap.

What other things could you ask people to do for you so that you can focus on rest, recovery, and bonding?

This is so important!

Today's partner tips is a fun one!

LOW SOUNDS

What does "low sounds" mean, exactly, and how will that help her labor better?

First things first, you should understand that the throat and vocal cords are sphincters. A sphincter is a ring of muscle surrounding an opening or tube that helps it stay open or closed.

When we practice vocalizing in low tones, that requires opening the sphincters in your throat to let the vocal cords vibrate properly. The throat and the cervix (also a sphincter) are directly connected. When one is tight, so is the other.

When you hear tension in her voice through higher and tighter sounds, remind her to use low sounds. Get close to her and vocalize those low sounds in her ear. Guide her down off that cliff of tension and deep into the open ocean of relaxation.

It might feel strange at first to be vocalizing right alongside her, and that's okay. But we promise that the more you can help her use low sounds, the better she'll manage the waves of each contraction.
