Meet our July Employee of the Month… Amber!

Amber Miller is our receptionist and also helps out in activities. During her 2 years as a part of our team, Amber has enjoyed building relationships with the residents and watching them succeed. Her motivation to come to work every day is being able to be a part of a great team and work environment. When asked what advice she would give to new employees joining the team, Amber stated, “Smile. You never know if someone’s having a rough day. Your smile could change someone’s day.

Amber has a dog and a cat. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephew, reading, and enjoying the outdoors. A fun fact about Amber is that her favorite food is Mexican!

We are so thankful to have Amber as a part of our team, and we can’t wait to see what her future has in store for her. Congratulations, Amber! 💙

Meet our February Employee of the Month… Ed!

Ed, our Maintenance Assistant, has been a valuable member of Altercare Big Rapids since 2020. He truly enjoys interacting with both residents and staff! Ed loves connecting and reminiscing with our residents. A fun fact about Ed is that his favorite food is pizza. Outside of work, Ed loves to go on vacations with his wife, watch football, and go hunting.

Our Maintenance Coordinator, Tristan, notes, "If you ask Ed to complete a task, he not only finishes it but often exceeds expectations."

Ed is a very hands-on employee; he takes care of painting, buffing floors, and ensuring all preventative maintenance is up to date. We are grateful to have you as part of our Altercare family, Ed! Your positive attitude and work ethic to improve things for the residents are truly appreciated! 💙

Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating National Activity Professionals Week!

In honor of this, we are excited to introduce our new Activities Coordinator, Keely. Although Keely is new to our facility, she has quickly established strong connections with our residents and has been organizing fantastic activities. Meet our January Employee of the Month… Cassie!

Cassie has been a Certified Nurse Aide here at Altercare Big Rapids since July of 2024. She genuinely enjoys spending time with the residents, with her primary goal being to brighten their days as much as they brighten hers. Cassie believes that those who do not work in long-term care should experience the profound relationships that develop with residents, which extend beyond mere assistance with daily routines; they truly become a part of one another's lives. To keep her energy up during her shifts, Cassie enjoys drinking Red Bull, and she appreciates sleeping in during her free time. An interesting fact about Cassie is that she is a natural redhead.

Cassie possesses a heart of gold and consistently goes above and beyond, both in her professional duties and in her personal life. This past December, she and her family sponsored 18 residents for Christmas, providing multiple gifts for each individual, which truly brightened their holiday season. Cassie exemplifies dedication to resident care, never cutting corners, even if it requires additional time. We are proud to recognize Cassie as our first Employee of the Month for 2025! 💙

Guess who jolly-strolled into our midst last week? That’s right—Santa himself! It was an absolute hoot, and nearly everyone earned their shiny spot on his nice list this year. The air was buzzing with laughter as Santa beamed at every resident, dishing out his signature "Ho Ho Ho!" The room sparkled with twinkling lights and festive décor, creating pure holiday magic. Residents couldn’t wait to spill their holiday dreams, and Santa was all ears, spreading cheer like confetti. Tales of childhood shenanigans and Christmas shimmers filled the air, making for a heartwarming afternoon that wrapped everyone in the true spirit of the season—joy, love, and a big ol’ dose of togetherness! 🎅🎄✨

Throughout the month, Altercare Big Rapids proudly supported Trinity Lutheran School of Reed City during their food drive. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to our "Feed Our Turkey" initiative through generous donations. A special acknowledgment goes to our receptionist, Denise Jackola, for her exceptional work in creating our turkey display. Our Altercare family deeply values our community, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to connect and contribute as the holiday season approaches. 🦃

Last week, Kayla Neuman, Administrator, and Samantha Taylor, Director of Nursing, were honored with the “Every Person, Every Time” pin by Hospice of Michigan. This award reflects their commitment to the organization's mission of delivering care to every patient, every time, regardless of their status. Altercare is proud to celebrate the achievements of these two remarkable women.

Cassandra Haner, a Marketing Advisor from Hospice of Michigan, delivered a speech honoring two remarkable women, sharing her initial impressions of them:

"I noticed a woman across the hall in scrubs and a mask, diligently sweeping and cleaning. I felt compelled to offer her a pen, and when I asked if she would like one, she enthusiastically replied, 'I would love a pen!' At the time, I had no idea who she was, especially since she had recently returned from maternity leave. It turned out that the individual scrubbing and cleaning was Kayla, the Administrator. In my experience visiting various facilities, I have never seen an Administrator so actively engaged in hands-on work as Kayla was. How wonderful is that?

Additionally, I had the opportunity to meet the amazing Director of Nursing, Samantha, who initially intimidated me due to her evident commitment to her role. I felt apprehensive about requesting a meeting with her, as I observed her surrounded by numerous papers, focused on her laptop, and engaging with residents and staff members. It is indeed rare to witness such dedication from a professional. We greatly admire these two and Altercare and the unwavering commitment that the entire team demonstrates toward their residents."

We are so proud of these two ladies and couldn’t think of anyone better to represent Altercare Big Rapids. 💙

We were thrilled to be able to celebrate Veterans Day by recognizing our very own veterans. Our staff and resident veterans received a certificate, patch, and a thank you card. They were all recognized individually, showing everyone that their bravery and sacrifices are appreciated. We also had a raffle for the veterans as well as beverages and snacks for our attendees. We ended our celebration by reading a Veterans Day poem and watched a short dedication video. Thank you to all of the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. 💙

On Veterans Day we honor all
Who answered to a service call.
Soldiers young and soldiers old
Fought for freedom, brave and bold.
Some have lived, while others died,
And all of them deserve our pride.
We’re proud of all the soldiers who
Kept thinking of red, white, and blue.
They fought for us and all our rights.
They fought through many days and nights.
And though we may not know each name,
We thank all veterans just the same.
