Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, she lost her sight and her hearing after a bout of illness when she was 19 months old. She then communicated primarily using home signs until the age of seven, when she met her first teacher and life-long companion Anne Sullivan. Sullivan taught Keller language, including reading and writing. After an education at both specialist and mainstream schools, Keller attended Radcliffe College of Harvard University and became the first deafblind person in the United States to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Big Rapids Orthopaedics will be closing at noon on 12/23 and we will re-open on Monday 12/27 so our staff can spend some well-deserved holiday time with family. Happy holidays to you and yours ⛄️

Back from my first surgical mission trip to San Pedro Sula in Honduras. Under the auspices of the World Surgical Foundation over 30 volunteers from all parts if the US worked at 2 hospitals and did an amazing job. We ran 6 operating rooms for 5 days and did over 120 cases. Approximately 25 were complex hand surgery patients with congenital and post traumatic problems. Feel pleased that we were able to help so many who had no access to good medical care. We have laid the foundation to train local surgeons so that in the future they will take the lead role in local surgical care.

This is my first surgical mission trip to Honduras. I feel privileged to be here with colleagues from all over the world. The people here are in desperate need of medical care. I am doing my best to help them. I’m also training local surgeons in Hand Surgery. These were some of our cases on the first day.
