I’ve returned to this sacred land many times, and each visit feels like a homecoming.

In just a few days, we’ll gather again on the cliffs of Big Sur—to rest, to reconnect, and to remember the deep intelligence of love that lives within us.

At 97, Penny Vieregge—known to many as Damaris—continues to offer what she has always carried:
presence, devotion, and the courage to let poetry open the heart.

In this moment, she shares Troubled by Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinsky—
a poem that reminds us that love is not a problem to be solved, but a fire that keeps asking us to stay.

Hafiz speaks of the heart being stirred awake—
of a sacred kind of trouble that cracks us open
so something truer can move through.

Penny has been part of Esalen Institute since the very beginning—a dear friend of co-founder Dick Price and a living bridge between Esalen’s origins and its ongoing inquiry into human potential.

This February, within the Esalen container, she will join us for one special session—
a devotional duet of voice and alchemy crystal singing bowls, where poetry, sound, and listening become a shared practice.

February is often the hardest month for many of us.
Short days, reduced sunlight, and lingering winter stress can impact mood, sleep, and the nervous system—especially the heart.

This is why we gather.

From February 9–13, we’ll come together at Esalen Institute to Attune to Love—using sound, resonance, and shared presence to support nervous system regulation, emotional coherence, and genuine connection.

Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls work through vibration and frequency, inviting the body out of survival mode and into states of rest, receptivity, and repair—states where the heart can soften and recalibrate.

The land holds us.
Sound leads the way.
We listen and attune.
Love opens us to our greatest wisdom.

Because no one is meant to get through February alone.

There’s a moment in every Esalen workshop that asks my nervous system to slow down and trust.

By day four, we’ve co-regulated. We’ve listened. We’ve softened.
And then I invite participants to take the mallets into their own hands—
like magic wands, yes—but also as tools of listening, care, and the gentleness of a butterfly.

It’s exciting.
It’s tender.
It’s a powerful moment.

The bowls respond not to force, but to presence.
And in that moment, people feel the magic not around them—but through them.

This is how sound becomes embodied, something you learn to offer with devotion.

Writing to you from the other side…
Five days at Esalen with 40 souls who traveled from across the country — and as far as Copenhagen — to rest, remember, and recalibrate through sound.

We explored the neuroscience of sound, dove into the alchemy of crystal bowls, worked with mantra and voice, and spent long stretches in the kind of listening that reorganizes you from the inside out.

Hi friends! It’s been a while since I properly introduced myself…

I’m Deva, the heart and hands behind Sacred Sound & Wonder. I live between the Pacific Ocean and the mighty redwoods in Big Sur and also hold sessions in my San Francisco healing studio. 🌊🌲

I’ve been following the path of sound as medicine for nearly three decades.

My journey began in 1997 at the Dalai Lama’s teachings in India, where I received my very first singing bowls. Since then I’ve studied and shared sound in the Himalayas, Peru, Egypt, Bali, Central America, and most recently with the humpback whales of French Polynesia 🐋.

Over the years…
• I’ve guided retreats and immersions around the world, helping people find rest, clarity, and joy.
• I’ve released two albums (Overlapping Halos and Dawn to Dreams) and have a third, Moonrise, on the way 🌙
• I now care for a collection of over 100 alchemy crystal bowls and have placed more than 800 in homes worldwide.

I perform for large audiences and guide intimate retreats and sound journeys where people come to rest, remember, and reconnect with what matters most.

✨ My guiding truths: sound is medicine, silence is sacred, and laughter is essential.
