Overdose Awareness Day 🕯 August 31, 2025

Today, we pause to honor lives lost to overdose and hold space for grief, healing, and commitment. This isn’t just a date on the calendar, it’s a reminder that no one should ever face addiction alone, and that drugs don’t have to be deadly.

Last year, 19 of our neighbors were lost to substance-related causes, that’s 5% of all deaths in town, with 9 of those due to opioids. These aren’t statistics. These are real people, friends, family, neighbors, whose absence is deeply felt in our homes and hearts.

Yet amid devastating loss, hope shines through. Thanks to the Community Naloxone Grant, we distributed 630 Narcan kits in 2024, that’s more than 60 life-saving kits for every overdose death. That's not just a number, it’s lives saved, families spared unimaginable grief, and proof that our community cares deeply.

We may still sit in the top 25% statewide for overdose incidents, but that reality doesn't define us, it motivates us. Across Massachusetts, overdose deaths are falling! Declines of 36% statewide reflect the power of harm reduction and expanded access to treatment.

So today, as we remember, let’s also act: Wear purple; Light a candle in honor of someone we’ve lost; Start a conversation: be open, honest, and full of compassion; Seek training in Narcan or share it with someone who might need it; Send a note of love or support to families and friends affected.

Because remembrance without action is incomplete. Let’s remember and keep acting with hope, empathy, and unwavering solidarity. You're not alone. Your life matters. No one should be forgotten.

💜 Billerica Goes Purple for Overdose Awareness

Beginning tonight, the Town of Billerica is going purple in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day. This is a time to remember those we’ve lost to overdose, support those in recovery, and raise awareness about the devastating impact of substance use disorder in our community.

Why Purple?
The color purple is a symbol of awareness, remembrance, and hope. By lighting up buildings, tying ribbons, and sharing resources, Billerica joins countless other communities in showing that every life matters, and that we are united in breaking the stigma around addiction.

You can take part, too:

Wear purple on August 31st

Tie a purple ribbon outside your home or business

Attend local awareness events and vigils

Talk to your loved ones about prevention and support resources

Share this message to help spread awareness
