The extra steps matter! 👌

The warm-up is the foundation of sound movement.

A thoughtful warm-up:

• Increases circulation
• Hydrates fascia
• Improves joint lubrication
• Creates suppleness
• Prepares the horse mentally for work
• Gives the nervous system time to organize coordination and balance

A quality warm-up protects tissue health, prepares the horse both physically and mentally, improves performance, and reduces the risk of compensatory tension—enough to make it a successful ride on its own.

A proper cool down is just as important.

It allows the body to gradually return to baseline, supports circulation and recovery, and helps the nervous system settle—so the work you’ve done can integrate rather than be held as tension.

Where do you see tension in your horse?

Where does tension show up?

Some of the most common places are:
• Poll and neck
• Shoulders
• Along the back
• Hind end

Sometimes it shows up in movement. Sometimes in behavior.
Sometimes in things we’ve just gotten used to seeing.

It’s worth paying attention to.

Even when they’re uncomfortable.

That’s what makes them so incredible… and also why it’s our responsibility to pay attention.

Lately, I’ve seen/heard some things that have been sitting heavy on my heart. These are moments where animals weren’t treated with the care and respect they deserve.

And it’s been a reminder.

From the very beginning, God gave us dominion:

“Let them have dominion…” — Genesis 1:26–28

Dominion is not control for our own benefit, it is the God-given authority and responsibility delegated to man to steward, manage, and care for creation.

“The Lord God… put him in the garden to work it and take care of it.” — Genesis 2:15

This kind of authority was never meant to be harsh, careless, or self-serving.

“A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal…” — Proverbs 12:10

Even in the smallest details, God made it clear:

“Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” — Deuteronomy 25:4

Because His care extends to all of it:

“You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.” — Psalm 36:6

This calls us back.

Back to awareness.
Back to responsibility.
Back to compassion.

If we’ve been given authority, then we’ve also been given accountability.

These animals are not just tools or inconveniences. They are part of what God has entrusted to us.

And how we care for them matters.
