This morning I was thinking about the the many wars fought among nations and the wars fought in politics, and the wars fracturing so many families today. Maybe it would be wise before dying on any hill, that we first carefully consider whether we are standing on a hill - or if we are hiding in a hole we have dug to justify our wounded pride?

Sometimes my fiercest certainty of rightness, and another's wrongness was to conceal my misplaced shame: that I am often foolish and imperfect - just like everyone else on planet earth. :)

I read this poem recently, although I see the shortness of life, and feel urgency to live in this moment as well as I can - I may not share the author's cloudy view. It is life's very shortness, that should lead us to longer hopes. Yet, I can still respect his perspective, as Earnest Dowson struggled with the reality of his own abbreviated life, made shorter from his severe drinking problem.

The Shortness of Life Forbids Us Long Hopes

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

Today’s poem is by Ernest Dowson (1867-1900). Merely discussing him is a sad matter, because, like Sebastian Flyte in Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited, Dowson was both a student at O…

Friday’s jobs report caught my attention.

The latest U.S. jobs report showed something many people have been feeling for months now, it was not "unexpected" - the labor market is softer than the headline numbers suggested earlier this year.

• The U.S. economy lost about 92,000 jobs in February, and the official unemployment rate rose to 4.4%.
• Payroll data for previous months was also revised downward by roughly 69,000 jobs, which suggests hiring momentum was weaker than originally reported.

The last 3 years we have seen significant downward revisions to job creation data:

Benchmark year Revision
2023 –818k
2024 –266k
2025 –898k

Data from Indeed’s Hiring Lab suggests the economy may be entering what they call a “low-hire environment”—job openings are stabilizing but not growing much, and unemployment is expected to drift higher as hiring slows.

Another surprising shift:
For the first time in 48 years, recent college graduates are seeing unemployment rates that are higher than workers without degrees in some fields, reflecting weakness in entry-level white-collar hiring.

Manufacturing data has also been softening, with factory employment declining in the most recent report and broader industrial activity slowing. On the ISM manufacturing survey, U.S. manufacturing had been in contraction for 26 straight months through December 2025.

My suggestion for those who have a job, is to stay put right now. And for those people with disabilities in Montana looking for work, we can help you. :)

Nonfarm payrolls were expected to increase 50,000 in February while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%.

Step forward anyway — even when the edge of the known world feels cloudy. The truest path to becoming who you were created to be is rarely revealed all at once; it is discovered through intentional, sometimes terrifying, unsteady movement on misty steps. Trust and hope that Grace will fill the incongruence between who you are today and who you are striving to become for tomorrow.
