It was true when I posted this in 2021 and it is just as true today. The narrative needs to change..

It’s your story. It’s your journey that matters.

So often, during physical therapy sessions at Inspire, I hear clients say “I’ve never told anyone that” or “my provider has never asked me about that.”

It is so important for me to learn your history, and learn about what factors influence your day or your healing process. To me, hearing you and meeting you where you are is my biggest goal during our first visit, and every session that follows. That is where the body meets the brain in the healing process.

Our bodies and brains are so interconnected. Physical pain and sensations can often be amplified with stress, fear or anger. By feeling heard, acknowledged and validated, your body and brain are able to work together to address deeper roots of our pain experience.

Feeling like your pain is not understood is such a frustrating space to live in. So, I challenge you to take a risk with me - open up, share your story, let me show you how we can build trust together - that is where the healing will begin.

The journey doesn’t stop after childbirth; it’s just a new chapter! To help navigate the physical changes that come post-pregnancy, consider adding a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist to your recovery plan. Here are five amazing reasons why:

1️⃣ Regain Pelvic Floor Strength 💪
After childbirth, it's common for the pelvic floor muscles to weaken, which may lead to urinary or f***l incontinence or even pelvic organ prolapse. A Pelvic PT can help guide you through exercises designed to regain strength and control.

2️⃣ Rebuild Core Stability 🎯
Your core muscles go through a lot during pregnancy and childbirth. A Pelvic PT can help you restore core functionality, improve your posture, and make it easier for you to lift, carry, and cuddle your little one.

3️⃣ Reduce Scar Tissue and Adhesions 🌈
If you’ve had a C-section perineal tear or episiotomy, you might experience discomfort or reduced mobility due to scar tissue. Pelvic PT can offer targeted techniques to break down scar tissue and improve your range of motion.

4️⃣ Pain Relief and Enhanced Sexual Health: Postpartum pelvic pain is a common concern - common but NOT normal. By addressing muscular imbalances, reducing tension, and promoting relaxation, we can improve sexual health. Enhancing pleasure and reducing discomfort during intimacy is a win-win for both physical and emotional well-being.

5️⃣ Preventing Future Issues: Investing in pelvic floor PT postpartum isn't just about the present; it's about securing a healthier future too. By addressing any existing imbalances, we can prevent or minimize the risk of pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, and other pelvic floor disorders down the road.

So, if you’re in the postpartum phase—whether it’s been weeks, months, or years—seeking professional guidance is essential. A certified pelvic floor physical therapist can provide personalized care, assess your specific needs, and create a tailored treatment plan to support your recovery. Your body and your well-being are worth it!

September is NICU Awareness Month - You're Not Alone 💚

As a mom who’s been there, my heart goes out to each and every one of you walking through the halls of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I know the beeps of the monitors are a language we never wanted to learn, and the mixture of hope and fear can feel like an endless rollercoaster.

This month is dedicated to raising awareness, but also to enveloping families like ours in a blanket of support and understanding. You're not navigating this difficult journey alone—there's a community here that deeply cares and understands the unique challenges you face.

Not only are you managing the new postpartum experience yourself - pain, discomfort, hormones, the newness of it all - you are focusing every ounce of your energy on your little fighter. This is a time that postpartum individuals need the most support. Lean on your care providers, your family, and friends and share the complexities of your journey. Acknowledge the crushing weight of it all, but remember your mental and physical health are a priority too, let others lift you up and hold space for you. Personally, I know this is easier said than done, but it can make a world of difference to let others in during this time.

I’m sending you all a virtual hug filled with the love and strength that only a NICU parent can comprehend. You're incredibly strong, even when you feel at your weakest. 💖

Lean on those who've been there, reach out for support, and know that it's okay to ask for help. We've got this, one tiny step at a time. 🌱

🌸🤰 Five Compelling Reasons to See a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist during Pregnancy! 🌸🤰

🤩 Are you expecting a bundle of joy? If so, congratulations! As you embark on this incredible journey, let me tell you about a game-changer for your prenatal health: Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy! 🌟 Here are five reasons why seeing a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist during pregnancy is an absolute must:

1️⃣ Maintain a Strong and Stable Core: Pregnancy places unique demands on your body, especially your pelvic floor muscles. A skilled Pelvic Floor PT can guide you through exercises that strengthen your core, supporting your growing baby bump and helping to alleviate lower back pain.

2️⃣ Prepare for Labor and Delivery: Let's face it, labor and delivery can be intense. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy equips you with valuable tools and techniques to optimize your pelvic floor muscles for childbirth. Learn proper breathing, relaxation techniques, and exercises to enhance your body's ability to push and prevent complications.

3️⃣ Prevent and Treat Incontinence: As your baby grows, the pressure on your bladder increases. This may result in urinary incontinence or leakage. A Pelvic Floor PT will provide exercises and strategies to strengthen your pelvic floor, reducing the risk of postpartum incontinence and promoting bladder control.

4️⃣ Address Pelvic Pain and Discomfort: Pregnancy-related pelvic pain is no joke! It can range from mild discomfort to debilitating agony. With the guidance of a Pelvic Floor PT, you can identify the root causes of pelvic pain and work together to develop a personalized plan for relief. They'll provide techniques like manual therapy, stretching, and tailored exercises to help you feel your best.

5️⃣ Support Your Postpartum Recovery: Your body undergoes significant changes during pregnancy and childbirth. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy plays a crucial role in your postpartum recovery journey. By addressing any lingering pelvic floor issues, such as diastasis recti or perineal tears, your Pelvic Floor PT will guide you towards a quicker and smoother recovery, getting you back to feeling like yourself again.

👉 Remember, prioritizing your pelvic floor health during pregnancy is an investment in your overall well-being, both now and in the future. 🌈💪 Seek out the expertise of a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist, and empower yourself with the knowledge and tools to have a healthier, more comfortable pregnancy and postpartum experience.

👩‍⚕️💗 Share this post with your fellow parents-to-be and spread the word about the incredible benefits of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy during pregnancy! Together, let's support each other on this amazing journey. 🤗🌟

Your birth experience matters, mama!

Two years ago today, I had no idea how many ways my birth experience would impact me.

I am grateful for the experience, for having a healthy baby girl, for being able to birth her in a way that kept us both safe.

AND

I often mourn the birth experience I had envisioned, I still get chills when I touch my c-section scar, I wonder if I could have done anything to change the experience.

No matter how you birth your baby, it is ok to be grateful AND experience feelings of grief, hurt, or loss.

My sweet girl is two today, and although it has been an amazing day of celebration, it has also been a time of reflection for me. Inspire was born out of a fire and passion for supporting pregnant and postpartum women. A drive to change our birth experiences, to change our postpartum support and care, to change our healing process both mentally and physically. I hope to always inspire the individuals I work with to feel empowered, encouraged and supported.

Help me celebrate today by reaching out to a pregnant or postpartum mama you know. Offer them your time, a meal, some supportive conversation. Be there for the mamas you know. Ask them about their birth story and if, by chance they don’t feel ready to share, then simply just be there for them. Especially over the last year and a half, so many more mamas are feeling isolated in their experiences and so many more are lacking support. We all need each other ❤️
