Governor Kathy Hochul today declared a state of emergency and announced new actions in response to the Trump administration stripping food assistance from 3 million New Yorkers come November 1.

Since the inception of the program, SNAP benefits have been federally funded. New York administers approximately $650 million per month in federally funded SNAP benefits to nearly 3 million New Yorkers. Given the scale of the program, Governor Hochul along with governors across the country have repeatedly emphasized that no state government can replace SNAP benefits or backfill the program.

Here’s a look at what today’s announcement means for New Yorkers:
$65M in new State funds for programs that support food banks, pantries, soup kitchens and more to provide emergency food assistance to New Yorkers

$40M in new funding for the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides emergency food relief and nutrition services to food-insecure populations. HPNAP works in partnership with a network of about 2,700 Emergency Food Providers (EFPs), including food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.

$25M in new funding for Nourish NY, which supplies surplus agricultural products (e.g., milk, apples, cheese, yogurt, cabbage, squash) to populations who need them through the State’s network of food relief organizations (i.e., regional food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, and community-based organizations that provide food for free to persons experiencing food insecurity).

🎁 Give the gift of a meal this holiday season!

Our 6th Annual Holiday Giving Box is coming soon! Last year, we provided holiday meals to 425 families (including 30 Veterans) and over 2,200 individuals.

Each box includes a turkey, fresh local produce, all the fixings for a complete meal, plus dessert, sparkling cider, and a handmade recipe book from our CCE Nutritionists! 🥧🍎

This year, we hope to match last year’s impact, but we need your help. Every donation counts, big or small, and helps put a holiday meal on the table for families in need. ❤️

To donate, visit the link: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/broomecountycouncilofchurches/event/holidaygivingbox2025/

The Holiday Giving Box is a partnership between Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Cornell Cooperative Extension-Broome County, CHOW, Broome Tioga Boces Rock on Café, and The Agency Leadership Alliance.

Happy National Farm to School Month!

🥔 Last week, our Farm to School & Nutrition Educator, Caitlin, led a fun lesson at Ben Franklin Elementary in the Binghamton City School District using potatoes grown by the students themselves! 🌱

She taught about the parts of a plant (did you know potatoes are part of the stem of a plant?), different types of gardens, and made an Herbed Potato Salad that the students loved!

Thank you to our Farm to School partners, Broome-Tioga BOCES Rock on Café and the Food and Health Network, for support in making this a success!

🎬 How fun! 🍿

Last week, our nutrition educators Ann and Naomi brought some whole grain fun to the Trunk or Treat event at the Southern Tier Independence Center! They handed out popcorn to more than 150 people (did you know popcorn is a whole grain?!), and their movie-themed trunk, complete with a red carpet, was a hit! 👏
