Under the heat of an Alabama August morning, more than 100 people gathered yesterday to witness history as the Guntersville VA Clinic was officially renamed the Colonel Ola Lee Mize VA Clinic. Colonel Mize was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Korean War.

Mize, who died a little more than a decade ago at the age of 82, was equally renowned for his decades of service in Vietnam and his leadership in developing U.S. Army Special Forces. Two additional bronze plaques were installed, one on the exterior and another inside the building, along with historic photographs, his Medal of Honor citation, and pictures of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as he receives the nation’s highest award for valor.

At 88, Ms. Betty Mize, the colonel’s widow, attended the dedication ceremony along with her family, friends, federal, state, and local leaders who emphasized the significance of what renaming the clinic meant for the community. Congressman Robert Aderholt who introduced the bill signed into law last November, was also in attendance.

Guntersville VA Renamed in Honor of Alabama Medal of Honor Recipient Colonel Ola Lee Mize

The Birmingham VA Health Care System is honored to announce that the Guntersville VA Clinic is officially renamed the Colonel Ola Lee Mize VA Clinic. This tribute honors the extraordinary life and service of Colonel Ola Lee Mize, an Alabama native awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Korean War. Born in Albertville, Alabama, Colonel Mize served with distinction in both the Korean War and Vietnam War and played a pivotal role in shaping the U.S. Army Special Forces. His extraordinary bravery at Outpost Harry in June 1953—where he repeatedly risked his life to save fellow soldiers, lead counterattacks, and repel enemy assaults—earned him our nation’s highest military honor.
