We can become so accustomed to excusing our behavior even when it’s just a regular part of being human. Reminder: we all need times to cry, to walk away, to take a minute for ourselves, and to not have an answer in every given moment. Welcome to humanity.

Part 2 of 2. There is a large difference between processing something happening in our lives and ruminating over the same thoughts over and over. Part one shared three quick ways to check if you’ve veered into rumination. Part two is about one way to shift out of rumination.

People often wonder, how does a diagnosis help? For one, it changes our understanding of what is causing your internal experiences so that we can a. understand each other better b. recognize the types of therapy, goals, and supports that are actually beneficial, and c. create solutions that work WITH your brain style, not against it! I want to empower you to deeply connect with and put words to your internal experience so you can help others comprehend what you live with on a daily basis when navigating a neurotypical world.

You might think that avoidance or the silent treatment will help your partner or friend understand exactly what you’re feeling, but there’s no way they can understand unless you communicate it to them. Consider how you can share how what they have said or done affected you directly and give them a chance to respond differently once they truly know how you feel. Talking first is not “giving up” or “giving in”, it’s giving yourself a chance to get what you actually need and to understand each other more deeply.

Conversations around grief are always difficult. You might be wondering, “Do they want me to ask?” “Do they want me to pretend everything is normal and not bring it up?” “Will I make it worse if I do?” In general, when people lose someone they love, they are feeling fifteen different conflicting emotions all at once and those emotions don’t have anywhere to go if everyone is tiptoeing around them. People WANT to talk about the people they care about, dead or alive. I’ve given a few easy entry points to help you start a conversation so you can sit, listen, and learn about these wonderful people who are missing out on this holiday season. Just giving someone space to share about who they’re missing can make a world of difference this season!
