This month we are talking about how to move from seeing a person in medical need to rendering care. Learning these steps can make all the difference in saving someone's life. Ask yourself if you are ready to act in an emergency.

We know that disasters and emergencies strike without warning, and at any time. Receive medical training that will enable you to save lives in these situations and feel confident in your training.

Heart attack vs. cardiac arrest: do you know the differences? Learn with us and be more prepared to act in a cardiac medical emergency on our website blog, linked below.

If you don’t have a background in medicine, it probably seems as though the words “heart attack” and “cardiac arrest” are used interchangeably. An image may form in your mind of someone with chest pain, pain in one of their arms, and difficulty breathing, who suddenly collapses.

We are grateful to the community for allowing us to set up a booth at their annual 5k and fun run this past weekend. We had the equipment used in our courses on display, and appreciated answering questions about how to help someone in a medical crisis. We look forward to next year!

Come check out our booth at community events in Birmingham! We are happy to answer questions about CPR training and equipment.

CPR and AED Special Considerations: Water

If the patient is in the water, remove them. Effective, high quality CPR requires a stable, hard surface to place the patient on. Immediately check the airway for breathing, and the pulse at the carotid artery for a pulse, taking no more than 10 seconds. Attempt to arouse the patient by tapping them on the shoulders and shouting "are you OK?". If no response is given, and there is no pulse and no breathing, perform CPR. Direct or alert 9-1-1, and send someone to get the AED.

When the AED arrives, ensure the patient is as free of water as possible. Use a rag, towel, or clothing to pad off as much water as possible. This will allow the electricity traveling between the AED pads to pass through the body and the heart, instead of remaining on the top of the skin.

If you want to learn additional life-threatening skills and interventions, consider taking one of our nationally certified classes.
