The UAB O’Neal Cancer Center is pleased to announce the latest O’Neal Invests grant awards. In this cycle, three grants received the award, including two funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) and by the Children’s of Alabama Hope Fund, respectively.

Lewis Shi, M.D., Ph.D., of the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology received an O’Neal Invests pre-R01 grant.

Through funding generously provided by the BCRFA, Alexa Mattheyses, Ph.D., received funding for her catalyst grant. The BCRFA is a non-profit organization providing support to breast cancer awareness and research across the state of Alabama.

Furthermore, through funding from the Children’s of Alabama Hope Fund, Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., and Jamie Aye, M.D., received an O'Neal Invests grant catalyst. The Children’s of Alabama Hope Fund was established by the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric Cancer Research Center of Alabama with the goal of promoting research in the field of pediatric medicine.

O’Neal Invests grants fund UAB investigators initiating new cancer-related projects to do key preliminary work to enable competitive extramural applications. “Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation can be curative for many patients, but one of the biggest limitations has always been timely donor availability,” said Omer Jamy, MBBS, UAB O’Neal Cancer Center. “This innovative approach allows us to move forward when living-donor options are unavailable, saving critical time for patients with urgent needs.”

The UAB O’Neal Cancer Center Board of Advisors’ Patient and Family Services Committee and center director Barry Sleckman, M.D., Ph.D., recently spent a heartwarming evening at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, with a cookout and musical entertainment for patients and families staying during their cancer treatment. It was a special night filled with compassion, community, and meaningful connection. A special thank you to our talented musicians, Mark Taylor and Hiller Burton (daughter of Barbara Burton), for filling the room with music and joy. Together, moments like these remind us that healing includes kindness, fellowship, and support every step of the way.

To improve service and better meet demand, the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center began expanding our Acton Road clinic in March. The project should be completed by fall 2026.

The renovation will double capacity by adding seven new exam rooms, allowing more patients to receive timely, compassionate care close to home. It will also enable staff to deliver more efficient and personalized service.
This growth reflects our larger commitment to improving convenience and access to cancer services for the community. Patients will enjoy greater scheduling flexibility, fewer treatment delays, and better support for complex diagnoses. By investing in this facility, we hope to strengthen the role of our Acton Road clinic as a regional destination for high-quality oncology care.

Located just off Interstate 459, between Hoover and Vestavia Hills, this location brings leading-edge cancer care to Birmingham’s over-the-mountain communities and areas south of town, from the same providers that staff the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center downtown.
