During our most recent faculty meeting, Certified Medical Assistants at the Family Medicine Clinic at UAB Hospital-Highlands had an opportunity to refresh and review needs and set up for the variety of procedures performed in our clinics. Can online behavioral weight management programs be improved by simply adding a human touch? The iREACH Rural program hopes to answer that question by examining how high-touch support elements in digital interventions can be optimized for delivering weight loss programs to rural patients. Department researchers are working through the HEART-NET Primary Care research network to help bring this free program to people across Alabama, where more than 39% of adults are considered obese.

Caring for the champions! 🏆

Our own Ian McKeag, MD, CAQSM, associate professor and head team physician for the USA Lacrosse Women’s Sixes National Team, was on the ground in Chengdu, China, as the national team took gold at The World Games.

A former collegiate lacrosse player, Dr. McKeag was appointed head team physician in 2024. He called the position, “a career goal of mine since I started medical school.”

Cahaba-UAB Highlands Family Medicine Resident Khawla Suhaila, MD (second from left), recently returned from the STFM POCUS Summit sponsored by ABFM, where she was one of just five resident leaders.

Dr. Suhaila has a passion for integrating point-of-care ultrasound training into medical education and spent her time at the summit learning about how other programs across the country use POCUS. She also shared more about UAB’s POCUS initiative, highlighting how every Family Medicine resident in the program has an individual device plus gets POCUS additional training both online and in person.
