National AHEC Week — Day 4: Healthcare workforce development starts early. Through AHEC Pathway programs, we introduce high school students across Alabama to healthcare careers—dental pathways, medical school tours, CNA training, and the Behavioral Health Integration Academy. When students can see themselves in these roles early, it can make all the difference for the future workforce.

Today, we’re proud to spotlight Mike Anderson, a nominee for the 2025 Alumni/Advocate of the Year Award.

As an AHEC Scholar with East Central Alabama AHEC, Mike demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to community health.

After enrolling at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine, he became actively involved in service efforts across Alabama’s Black Belt region and other medically underserved areas.

He coordinated outreach opportunities, supported student engagement, and strengthened collaboration between AHEC staff and the Family Medicine Interest Group. His leadership also extended to service on the National AHEC Organization (NAO) Board of Directors, where he elevated student voices and championed rural training experiences.

Mike, your commitment to community health captures the spirit of AHEC in action. Congratulations on this honor!

Dr. Becky Reamey, Executive Director of the Alabama AHEC Network, served as a panelist on Panel 1: Building Alabama’s Rural Health Workforce, where she shared insights on how AHEC is actively working to recruit, train, and retain healthcare professionals in under-resourced areas.

She was joined by an outstanding panel of experts and partners:

• Joseph Coppiano, MD – UAB CU²RE Program
• Sameera Davuluri, MD – UAB Family Medicine
• Drake Lavender, MD, FAAFP – UA Rural Programs
• Lacy Smith, MD, FAAFP – Cahaba-UAB Residency
• Sen. April Weaver – Vice Chair, Alabama Senate Fiscal Responsibility Committee

The summit was hosted in partnership with the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, Alabama AHEC Network, MASA, and AAFP, and featured powerful conversations on funding models, policy, and collaborative strategies to build a healthier rural Alabama.
