Social work is professional work- and we need the Department of Education to treat it that way. Recent federal changes to loan limits for professional and graduate programs leave social work out, despite the fact that MSW and DSW programs meet rigorous professional standards and prepare practitioners for licensed, regulated, life-impacting work. This exclusion harms social workers and threatens access to our profession. NASW is working with CSWE and coalition partners to push the DOE to recognize social work as a professional degree. We’ve updated our student loan relief resources with the latest information and will be issuing an action alert as soon as the public comment period opens. When that happens, we will need social workers, students, educators, and allies everywhere to submit comments. Your voice will matter, your expertise will matter, your solidarity will matter.

SMART RECOVERY - EVERY TUESDAY AT 6 PM @ THE MOORE INSTITUTE
SMART Recovery (https://smartrecovery.org/) is the leading, evidence-informed approach to overcoming addictive behaviors and leading a balanced life. SMART is stigma-free and emphasizes self-empowerment. SMART is grounded in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and it supports people with substance dependencies or problem behaviors as they:
1. Build and maintain motivation to quit
2. Cope with their urges and cravings
3. Manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviors
4. Live a more balanced life
SMART differs from other peer support groups in that the meeting is run by a trained facilitator. I will be facilitating tonight at The Moore Institute (4126 Autumn Lane, Birmingham, AL 35243 - enter at loading dock in back). We meet for 90 minutes. At each meeting, participants briefly check-in (only if they want to, of course) and then we set the agenda and work tools from the book together.
The SMART Recovery Handbook, which is the foundation of the program and contains many helpful recovery tools, is only $12 (and many of the tools/worksheets are offered for free on their website). If you come to a meeting and don’t have money for a book, we will give you one for free.
Hope to see you there!
