My children were sent home with the following options for Field Day snacks from their school: Doritos, Cheetos, or Lays chips; M&Ms, starburst, or sour straws for candy; and Sunkist, Sprite, Dr. Pepper or Coke for soda.
Y’all. This is 2026. Poppi and/or OlliPop are just as common & readily available as the Coke brands; there are 1000 different kind of chips on the grocery store shelves using better oils (like avo!) and no ultra processed ingredients or artificial dyes and even more options for better candy/sweet choices.
It doesn’t have to be a battle. Choose wisely. It does have to be intentional. I wrote to the PE coaches who put this on year after year, sending the same form as always, to educate them on other healthier options. Then I drove into town and picked up these items in the middle of my workday so that my children could have them Friday for field day.
Should I have had to do that or should the school have provided better options? That wasn’t the battle I chose to fight. Healthier options are all around us, you just have to be educated! Hopefully the coaches know better bc of my note to them, and can do better next year with offering different options. Hopefully my kids will also inform their friends they’re snacking with, that these healthier options taste the same, if not better, because they’re made with real ingredients!
I don’t choose to be mad at the system, I choose to mindfully educate in order to change the system! Be the change you wish to see ❤️🙏🏼
