Welcome Dr. Chris Grijalba to the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine team! 👏

Dr. Grijalba is a board-certified family medicine physician with subspecialty training in primary care sports medicine. After graduating from the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine Fellowship program, Dr. Grijalba joined our team to increase access to high-quality, comprehensive care for athletes and active individuals of all ages.

He is passionate about providing personalized treatment plans, nutrition and exercise counseling, injury prevention strategies, and guidance to help patients safely return to the activities they love.

With a donation secured by UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, we donated 800 Guardian Caps to players in the Birmingham Youth Sports League, helping reduce concussion risk and promote safer play.

From multiple stress fractures that sidelined him for months, to achieving his dream of running at the collegiate level, Arthur Langley, Sophomore at Samford University and 6X AHSAA State Champion, credited Amit Momaya, MD, and the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine team for helping him get back on track.

From the clinic to the conference stage, Amit Momaya, MD, Chief of UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, recently served as faculty at the AO Orthopedics “Principles of Sports Medicine: The Joint Is an Organ” course in Nashville, TN. He shared evidence-based treatment strategies for knee and shoulder pathology with colleagues from across North America. 🌎

We are ready for the 2025-2026 sports season! UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine teamed up with the UAB Department of Emergency Medicine and Birmingham Regional EMS System (BREMSS) for an afternoon of hands-on training in sideline emergency care.

From spineboarding drills to high-pressure simulations, this collaborative session helped sharpen our team’s response to critical on-field situations. Our physicians also led key refreshers on managing:

♥️ Sudden Cardiac Arrest
🧠 Concussions
🥵 Exertional & Non-Exertional Collapse

These drills help ensure our team can respond with confidence and precision, all to protect the health and safety of every athlete in our care.
