Thank you to the staff at AEIVA (Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts) for hosting our dermatology residents! For this month’s didactic session, our residents visited AEIVA to engage with contemporary and modern art while the Blue Moon Cocoon exhibit was presenting. They even got the chance to make some art themselves!

Congratulations to our new 2026-2027 chief residents! Drs. Alia Abbas and Aman Nihal are both incredible doctors, and we are so excited to see them step into this leadership role.

A little bit more about our new chief residents:

Dr. Alia Abbas is originally from Missoula and attended the University of Alabama for undergraduate school. She is passionate about the UAB Dermatology residency program because of the incredible pathology they get to see and the opportunity to learn from wonderful mentors. In her free time, Dr. Abbas loves baking, cheering on the Tide, and all things general dermatology.

Dr. Aman Nihal grew up in Madison, WI, where he completed his undergraduate education and medical school. His clinical interests include dermatologic surgery, dermoscopy, and medical education. Outside of work, he enjoys watching documentaries with his wife, making his cat do flips, and trying new restaurants with friends.

Dr. Abby Smith and our pediatric dermatology team at Children’s of Alabama trained on using our newly-donated pulsed dye laser. Dr. Michael Digby and his clinic Renew Family Dermatology donated the laser as a gift to Children’s of Alabama and our UAB pediatric dermatology clinic. We are incredibly grateful for his generosity which will help treat numerous skin conditions and give our residents the opportunity to learn about the laser’s use.

The Skin of Color Society has appointed UAB Dermatology’s Dr. Tiffany Mayo as President-Elect. This term will be followed by ascension to the Presidency for the 2027-2028 term.

UAB Dermatology is honored to have such an incredible doctor serving as an Associate Professor and Director of the Dermatology Clinical Research Unit. Anyone who has met her knows this nomination is well deserved. Congratulations Dr. Mayo!

🏎️ This past weekend, Dr. Huang took UAB Dermatology residents Drs. Olsen, Olivet, Aman and Aldana to the 2026 Barber Motorsports Park AAD Skin Cancer Screening. They were able to educate the community on the importance of skin health while learning about the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) new digital skin cancer screening platform.

New Year, New Horizons. Our two chiefs ended the year with plans for fall of 2026 after they complete their dermatology residency this spring. We send our congratulations to Dr. Collin Pieper on matching with the Cleveland Clinic for a MDSO fellowship, and we look forward to welcoming Dr. Mia Harris as an Assistant Professor for UAB Dermatology. We know both of our chiefs are excellent doctors and are excited to see their bright futures!

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Aunna Pourang as our new MSDO Fellow! 🎉🥳 Aunna Pourang, MD, received her medical degree through the University of Florida Medical Honors Program, followed by family medicine residency at Mayo Clinic Florida and dermatology residency at Wayne State University. Her interests include expanding access to high-quality dermatology and skin cancer care in underserved and rural communities. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking and baking, hiking, visiting historical sites, and spending time with family.
We are so excited to welcome Dr. Pourang to the UAB Dermatology family!
