The Capitol Art Showcase Exhibition

The Transformative Powers of Creative Expression

Montgomery, Ala. – The Capitol Art Showcase Exhibition is a long-standing tradition that brings together peers and participants to once again highlight the power of creative expression. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Alabama Department of Mental Health is pleased to present the 21st Annual Capitol Art Showcase.

This exhibition, a familiar and meaningful event for the community, features artwork created by individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, developmental disabilities, and co-occurring conditions.

Art is a powerful form of nonverbal communication. It can both reveal and help process deep emotions and trauma. For many individuals navigating complex circumstances, engaging in art offers a path toward self-discovery, healing, and reflection.

The pieces in this exhibit reflect personal journeys and lived experiences, each offering a distinct voice and perspective. Together, they highlight the importance of mental health care and the value of visibility for those navigating recovery.

Through the Capitol Art Showcase, ADMH aims to highlight the importance of mental health, reduce stigma, and strengthen connections with communities by raising awareness of available resources. Visitors are encouraged to experience the exhibition throughout the month of May.

The exhibit will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Alabama State Capitol’s Old Supreme Court Library.

A public reception will be held on May 21, 2026, at the Alabama State Capitol, Old Supreme Court Library to celebrate the artists and announce the Best in Show Award, as voted on by the public. To vote, please visit https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/RrLiZAiFQc.

DEFINING GOOD DAYS This Mental Health Month, we encourage everyone to reflect on what a “good day” looks like to them. “Good” doesn’t have to mean happy or productive. It can mean calm, neutral, comfortable, manageable, or something else. It can change over time. It’s different for everyone, and only you can define what a good day looks like to you. No matter how you are feeling in this moment, remember that more good days are possible, help is available, and you are not alone. If having good days feels hard, you can check on your mental health with a free, quick, anonymous test at mhascreening.org. Mental Health Month Planning Guide 2026 | Mental Health America 9
