It’s National Dog Day 🐾 and at Crescent Grace, we’re honoring three of our most faithful teammates: Gatsby Grace, Lady Lake, and Danny Girl.

Our Border Collies are not afraid to work hard, and they don’t just clock in for cuddles—they take their role as healers, comforters, and faithful herders of hearts very seriously. From mealtimes to group sessions to outdoor walks and quiet moments of rest, their presence provides safety, grounding, and grace.

How they support recovery:
• Calming Connection: Their steady companionship brings peace before, during, and after meals—offering comfort when words are too heavy or when the chaos of life feels overwhelming.
• Grounding Presence: Soft fur, gentle eye contact, and (with consent) close companionship remind the body that safety, steadiness, and trust are possible again.
• Unconditional Love: Their compassionate acceptance creates a safe space for honesty, belonging, and the freedom to simply be yourself without judgment.
• Joyful Moments: Their playful spirits remind us that recovery holds not only hard work, but also laughter, lightness, and delight in small, everyday connections.
• Coping Companions: Working alongside clinicians, the dogs help clients practice breathing, grounding, and distress-tolerance—offering gentle support when emotions feel overwhelming.

At Crescent Grace, Gatsby Grace, Lady Lake, and Danny Girl are not just companions—they are trusted partners in healing and living reminders of the compassion and grace we strive to embody. 🌿 These canine companions hold empathy and create safe space for our clients in ways we cannot. Their presence is sacred, and they make us all better humans.

They may be bred to herd sheep, but at Crescent Grace they shepherd safety, connection, and joy—reminding us daily that grace often arrives on four paws. 🐾🌿 With Gatsby, Lake, and Danny by our side, the road to recovered living is never walked alone.

Resilient-describes the ability to bounce back from adversity, adapt to challenges, and maintain well-being in the face of difficulties. It’s about recovering from setbacks and having the mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility to adjust to stressful situations.
Ways to build resilience:
• Find your sense of humor - the ability to laugh at ourselves empowers us to connect in difficult times
• Movement - even a simple walk increases mental well being and allows us to thrive
• Emotional Exercise - openness to learning and challenging what we think we know increases coping and self esteem
• Feed Your Soul - whether it be prayer or practicing gratitude or waking in nature, spiritual connections ground us
• Friendship - connectedness creates for a sense of stronger inner support - we are stronger together
• Practice Courage - when we willingly face our rears while afraid we build bravery which creates resilience
• Honor your Values - our inner compass helps us determine right from wrong and strengthens our cavity to choose what’s best in hard times
• Develop Purpose - what are you recovering to? The brighter our hearts fire, the stronger we become
• Take Ownership - when we own what is ours, behaviors, desires, hopes, expectations, etc. we have a greater understanding of the things we can control from the inside out
• Have a Healthy Attitude - our mindset determines how we experience life’s difficulties - when we develop a healthy attitude we began to see life’s difficulties is challenges rather than obstacles empowering us to move forward
Paraphrased from Danielle Bernock “ Why resiliency matters”

Crescent Grace’s Director of Art Therapy, Chris Strang, is one of the most amazing humans you will ever have the privilege to know along your journey. Chris has been with Crescent Grace since the day we opened our doors. She has been in the eating disorder art therapy world for over 35 years and is probably the most noted in this field, albeit quietly and humbly. Spoiler alert she was also the President of the American Art Therapy Association and is a PhD neuroscientist to boot. While art is not everyone’s thing, at Crescent Grace, Chris reminds us art is about the process, not the outcome. Sound familiar? The process of art making however one defines it, has healing qualities. builds confidence, encourages curiosity, provides safety and containment and allows for the expression of things that often have no words. The Art House at Crescent Grace, yes we have a whole house, is a place where you can paint, draw, bead, make pottery, collage, or whatever you can imagine, Chris will find a way to help you make it happen. No judgment, no expectations just a safe place to land and explore. quiet spaces, music blasting, occasional dance parties and of course therapy dogs to cuddle. The art house is our number one safe space. And with Chris at the head of the experience we know our clients will be seen, heard, cared for, challenged and loved for who they are, as they are and find a little bit more of the beauty in themselves that has always been there. There is no one we can imagine running this part of our program and we are blessed and proud beyond words to call her ours!

Sweet dreams lovelies. We need each other. Embrace each other unconditionally (self included), hope the best life for all, defend one another, protect one another - together we find healing - together we create peace.

The need to be nurtured runs deep within. Learning to love ourselves is one of the most motherly things of all.

In an unexpected moment life decided to provide me this beautiful - grace filled memory.

Just shy of four years into a fully recovered life, I had found a peace within myself I thought would never be possible.

Hope often appears in the most unexpected times - when we are on the edge of sanity and ready to give up, it often emerges with a vengeance.

The part of our soul that begs for freedom, grasping for the life we believe exists but also believed we could never be a part of.

Anorexia Nervosa consumed my life for what felt like an eternity. It stole my integrity, it gaslit me into thinking I was nothing. I fell into its abyss headfirst and lost myself - almost forever.

But the universe had other plans. It thrust its hand into that darkness and dragged me to the light.

I emerged kicking and screaming. It was not an easy transition. Shedding the skin of my eating disorder was painful and terrifying.
Surrendering to the possibility of something unknown, even if it was better, was one of the most difficult times in my existence.

And then there were the healers. The humans who dared challenge me. The women who dared to extract my soul from the rubble of a troubled and tattered life.

The grace and compassion and willingness to hold me to a higher truth of these humans who wrestled with me to the other side of madness - they are soul warriors and I am forever in their debt.

This picture, it captures an authentic peace in a young woman who fought. At first she fount the world, she fought those who tried to help, and then one day she fought for herself and for her freedom.

Fast forward to almost 26 years later and I still fight but the fight now is for the others. For those lost in the rubble of lives ravaged by eating disorders, because we can’t fight alone.

The personal peace that comes with a fully recovered life is real. I will fight for that for anyone, every day. Always. In all ways.

With grace and love, HR
