Real people, real experiences. Hear from Jane on what led her to correctional healthcare:
"I chose a career in correctional healthcare to gain non-traditional nursing experience while serving a population that is often overlooked. My background was primarily in hospital settings, where care is highly structured, and nurses typically provide follow-up support after provider assessments.
Correctional healthcare is different. Nurses are often the first point of contact, conducting initial assessments, triaging needs, providing immediate care, and coordinating next steps. This front-line role carries a unique responsibility and creates a powerful opportunity to directly impact patient outcomes.
What truly drew me to this field was the chance to care for individuals with dignity and respect, seeing each patient beyond their circumstances. Before learning about correctional healthcare, I didn’t realize these opportunities existed. Once introduced, I quickly embraced the mission.
This work allows me to address a wide range of needs—from chronic disease management to mental health and dental support—in a challenging but deeply meaningful environment. Each day reinforces my belief that healthcare is a universal right and that empathy is just as important as expertise.
It is a privilege to serve in correctional healthcare and to be part of a mission rooted in compassion, healing, and hope."
