Nutrition information regarding diabetes and controlling blood sugar can be conflicting and misleading. When you are first diagnosed it can be a confusing and frustrating time and you might find yourself not knowing how to eat to help your blood sugar. Research has linked Intuitive Eating with improved blood sugar and A1c levels in people who have diabetes.

This virtual group is designed for people who have Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes and are interested in intuitive eating practices to help manage blood sugars.

This is a 4 week long virtual group that will meet weekly for 60 minutes. For more information and to sign up contact joannadiciccord@gmail.com

It has been almost 2 years since I have posted last 😬. Theres a couple reasons for this. The major one being this new little guy taking up most of my time and energy! ❤️💤

Another big change that happened this year is going completely on my own for private practice! It is a scary next step but also feels like the right time.

Practical Nutrition is still all things non-diet and intuitive eating. As well as a safe place for any one struggling with disordered eating or an eating disorder.

Lots of exciting things happening this year for Practical Nutrition, including more open spots for individual nutrition counseling and group courses coming soon!

The Restrict/Binge cycle is an all too common cycle for the majority of clients I work with and most people who have a long history with dieting.

When we diet or restrict certain foods or food groups we eventually will feel deprived due to lack of intake or lack of satisfaction. This leads to intense cravings followed by overeating which can cause feelings of being “out of control”, shame and guilt.

To regain control, you start dieting and restricting again, trying to be “good” - which eventually leads to deprivation, overeating, followed again by guilt. And the cycle continues.

If this feels likes something you experience regularly, you are not alone! The first step to help to break this cycle is providing your body with consistent and adequate nourishment throughout the day. The second step would be to make an appointment with a dietitian who specializes in this very thing! 😄

Your metabolism refers to a series of chemical processes in each cell that turn the calories you eat into fuel to keep you alive. This is an incredibly complex process, but to keep things short; the majority of the calories we eat is used to fuel the body’s major organs (brain, liver, kidneys, and heart) while at rest. Then the rest of our fuel goes towards digesting our food (which also helps keep you warm) and what is left over is used for physical activity.

Metabolism is influenced by genetics, age, lean muscle mass, fat tissue, etc., and can differ greatly from person to person.

At the same time it is hard to speed up the metabolic rate, it is much easier to slow it down. The best way to do this is by not eating enough. Dieting or restricting your intake slows your metabolism down and your body is more likely to save and store fuel instead of use it!

Best way to keep your metabolism revved up: EAT consistent meals and snacks throughout the day! Building more muscle mass will only help if you are adequately nourishing yourself!

It’s official! 🎉😁

Intuitive Eating has helped so many people suffering from disordered eating and eating disorders heal their relationship with food and their body, and I am thrilled to officially be a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor!

It has been inspiring to learn directly from and and to dig deeper into the research that supports this weight inclusive framework. Thank you both for the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Intuitive Eating’s impact on one’s physical and mental health.

Who doesn’t love a warm chocolate chip cookie!?!

I’ve had a lot of sessions this week regarding unconditional permission and the habituation effect. When you don’t allow yourself to have a certain food or have rules around it, you tend to have intense cravings for that food.

By definition, habituation is a decrease in response to a stimulus after repeated presentations. This is true for any new thing - including FOOD! Think of how leftovers don’t taste as good come the 3rd or 4th day of eating them. The more you eat the same food, the less enticement it offers. The point is not to never want the food again, but to feel more neutral around the food. This means some days you want to enjoy a cookie or two and other days you aren’t feeling anything sweet. This doesn’t happen overnight, but does happen with consistent nourishment and unconditional permission!

Pesto + pasta = 😍😍

When I discuss a balanced plate with clients I typically am referring to having a balance of carb, protein, fat + fiber/produce. However, balance doesn’t have to mean measuring out each macronutrient. Some meals will be higher in carbs, some will be higher in protein, etc. It is important to remember that balance might look different meal to meal, but it will even itself out throughout the week!
