💙 May is Foster Care Awareness Month 💙
According to NCTSN, children who experience trauma are 2.7 times more likely to have behavioral problems in school and are significantly more likely to be suspended or expelled — even in early grades.
Behind every foster care story, there’s often trauma.
At Gateway, we support foster families with trauma-informed tools to help children heal, grow, and thrive.
Because foster care should be more than safe—it should be healing.

Last week, Gateway, alongside our Board of Directors, hosted our Legislative Breakfast, bringing together leaders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss the importance of trauma-informed care and child welfare in Alabama.

Our CEO, Kate O’Day, and VP of Mission Impact, Jeff Tolbert, led meaningful discussions on the impact of our work, the need for strong community partnerships, and how we can collectively ensure better futures for children and families. Our Board of Directors also shared their insights and commitment to supporting these initiatives.

A big thank you to the lawmakers and community leaders who joined us in these critical conversations! Your support and collaboration are essential in driving change and expanding access to vital services for Alabama’s children and families.

Gateway was honored to participate in the PARCA Annual Forum 2025, which focused on the state of mental health in Alabama. Our CEO, Kate O’Day, joined a panel discussion on the critical work we are doing at Gateway to meet the needs of children and families.

We were also honored to be recognized by Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Boswell, who highlighted our upcoming collaboration to train ADMH staff in trauma-informed care.

The Governor’s remarks emphasized the need for strong partnerships in mental health and prevention—a mission we are deeply committed to.

At Gateway, we are proud to stand alongside state leaders, policymakers, and mental health advocates to ensure that every child has access to the care and support they need to thrive.
