At a very early age, Aubrey Bushelon had a vision of owning and operating his own funeral home. As an aggressive, hardworking, goal – oriented teenager, he knew that the opportunity that he was given to work at Poole’s Funeral Home on the weekend would help him realize his vision. He received an insurmountable amount of knowledge and experience from his mentors, the late founding owner, James Poole, and his sons John and Ernest. They took Aubrey under their wings because of his gentle spirit and willingness to work and learn. Aubrey was employed at McKesson Robins Wholesale Drugs and retired after 25 years of service. He then concentrated on his vision, and established Bushelon Funeral Home in 1975. He reached out to many, and was known for helping bury those who needed his assistance monetarily. Aubrey’s compassion for humanity and life’s work was dedicated to funeral service. He passed along his affinity to be of service to those in need to his family. Today, the torch continues as the Bushelon Family continues to “Care For You & Your Loved Ones”.

Bushelon said Brooks was “like family,” and had mentored a generation in how to care for a deceased person’s grieving loved ones with dignity and grace. His mother, she said, was one of the first licensed Black women embalmers in Alabama, which she suspects is how Brooks came to have an affinity for funeral service.
