Summer Heat + Seniors = Dehydration Risk
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of dehydration—especially for older adults. At Visiting Angels, we see firsthand how quickly the summer heat can take a toll on our aging loved ones.
Why are Seniors More at Risk?
▪️ They often don’t feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated
▪️ Certain medications (like diuretics) can increase fluid loss
▪️ Reduced kidney function means the body doesn’t conserve water as well
▪️ Physical or cognitive conditions may limit access to water
What Dehydration Can Lead To:
▪️ Dizziness or confusion
▪️ UTIs
▪️ Fatigue
▪️ Increased fall risk
▪️ Heat exhaustion or stroke
How You Can Help Prevent It:
▪️ Offer water frequently, even if they don’t ask
▪️ Mix it up with fruit-infused water, popsicles, or hydrating snacks (think watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges!)
▪️ Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks
▪️ Keep water within reach at all times
▪️ Watch for early signs: dry mouth, darker urine, low energy
At Visiting Angels, our caregivers are trained to help prevent heat-related health issues by making hydration a priority in every care plan.
If you are concerned about a loved one this summer, let’s connect! Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference in their health and comfort.
