Meet Karolina, a bright and determined 22-year-old recovering from a neurological condition that causes seizures, facial spasms, and mobility issues. She also lives with a condition that affects her heart rate and blood pressure, requiring close medical supervision.

Karolina was admitted to Encompass Health Lakeshore for intensive therapy and monitoring. Her care team manages her medications and seizures while physical and occupational therapists focus on improving her strength, coordination and daily function.

Eric Lockhart, 42, was living independently when sudden back and neck pain led to a diagnosis of fungal meningitis. The illness drastically changed his life, leaving him unable to walk or complete daily tasks on his own.

He was admitted to Encompass Health Lakeshore where he received cardiac and kidney monitoring, a diet plan to support nutrition and electrolyte balance, nursing care for vital stability and therapy to rebuild strength, mobility and independence.

With determination, Eric made powerful progress. By discharge, he was independently using a wheelchair and proudly walking steps.

Teri Campbell, a 55-year-old elementary school teacher, was admitted to Encompass Health after fracturing her hip and was also diagnosed with cancer. Having missed her yougest son's graduation while she was in the hospital, we didn't want Teri to miss another major event. Her goal was to walk down the aisle and dance with her son at his wedding, and we're thrilled to see that this dream became a reality.

Pam Clayton, a licensed practical nurse at Encompass Health, was recently honored with the Tulip Award. The Tulip Award is a recognition for healthcare professionals who show exceptional compassion, empathy and dedication to patient care. With 14 years of nursing experience and two years at Encompass Health, Pam is known for her deep connection with patients and her ability to meet them with understanding and kindness.

A mother of two and grandmother, Pam has endured personal loss, including the passing of one of her children. She draws strength from her family and channels that resilience into her nursing, using her own experiences to offer comfort and hope. Through dedicated therapy, Shaunderece relearned essential tasks like dressing, showering, using a wheelchair and getting into a car. Her care team also helped manage her medications and nutrition to support her recovery.

Robert Simmons was admitted Encompass Health Lakeshore after dealing with multiple serious health issues. Upon arrival, he was in a wheelchair, completely dependent on others for movement - a devastating change for a man who had always been fully independent. Robert's recovery team developed a comprehensive treatment plan. He participated in three hours of daily physical and occupational therapy while doctors carefully monitored his heart function and fluid levels. Nutrition specialists helped optimize his diet, therapists managed his elbow fracture pain and nurses implemented safety measures to prevent dangerous blood clots.

Through relentless effort in therapy and meticulous medical care, Robert achieved what first seemed impossible. His care team celebrated each hard-won milestone - the first time he sat up independently, his initial attempts at standing with support and those unforgettable first steps on his own. Meet Thelma Cathey, a joyful and determined patient at Encompass Health. Thelma came to us after a hospital stay for complications related to her kidneys. When it came time for rehabilitation, she chose Encompass Health because of the great care her husband received here in the past.

Upon admission, Thelma was weak and needed significant help. But she had a clear goal - to regain her independence with transfers and walking. Kim Thiekler and her husband were visiting their son when tragedy struck. As they parked in the driveway, her husband's Mountain Dew bottles tumbled and rolled downhill. In his attempt to catch them, he slipped, hitting his head on a rock with fatal consequences. Devastated, Kim rushed to him only to fall herself, suffering many injuries. Her physicians recommended Encompass Health Lakeshore for the specialized care she desperately needed.

Upon arrival, she needed assistance sitting up, walking and dressing. Through effort and expert care, Kim made remarkable progress. Physical therapy restored her sitting, standing and walking abilities, while occupational therapy helped her regain independence in dressing, bathing and other essential tasks. Kim shared, "Everyone here has been so comforting and amazing." Kim shares her story with two purposes: to honor her beloved husband's memory, and to testify that true healing comes not just from medical treatment, but from being cared for by people who genuinely cherish their patients' wellbeing.

JeanMarie Collins Clark was at her son’s house when she suddenly passed out, hit her head and fractured her femur. A CT scan revealed a brain bleed and vertigo. After surgery, she was referred to Encompass Health Lakeshore for intensive inpatient rehabilitation.

There, she received 24/7 medical supervision and a personalized therapy plan. Physical therapy focused on strength, mobility and balance. Occupational therapy helped her safely regain daily living skills.

JeanMarie’s vertigo resolved and she returned home as her femur continued to heal. Now, this actor and coach is eager to get back to doing what she loves, teaching.

John Rogers, 67, faced pneumonia, kidney failure and a severe knee infection that led to an above-the-knee amputation. His doctor recommended Encompass Health Lakeshore for inpatient rehab to regain strength and independence.

At Encompass Health, John’s care team managed dialysis, IV antibiotics and wound care while helping him build strength, balance and daily living skills. Therapists prepared him for life with a prosthetic and supported his respiratory recovery.

Alex Franco was admitted to Encompass Health following a cardiac stent placement. Upon arrival, Alex wanted to get back to doing the things he loves, such exercising, biking and gardening. Alex was also accustomed to starting his mornings with a headstand. He shared that he was doing a headstand every morning prior to his condition. Does advanced age or limited mobility have you concerned about planning your next great getaway? Being a certain age or living with a disability can present challenges when traveling, but today there are more options than ever for those with limited mobility. With some advanced planning, you can visit the destination of your dreams be it by plane, train or automobile.

✈️ Traveling by plane:
- Arrive early. Allow two to three hours for domestic flights and more if traveling internationally.
- Book a wheelchair when you are booking your flight, and let your airline know at check in that you reserved a wheelchair.
- If you require a wheelchair during the flight, the request must be made 48 hours in advance.

🚂 Traveling by train:
- Check to see if discounts apply. Some rail companies offer discounts to those with disabilities or caregivers.
- Be sure to book wheeled mobility device space, wheelchair transfer accessible seats and accessible bedrooms.
- Make sure you to have your proof of disability with you.

🚘️ Traveling by automobile
- Swivel car cushions can help assist you in getting in and out of the vehicle.
- If you use a wheelchair, scooter or powerchair, make sure the vehicle has a lift.
- Check public transportation and ride sharing programs in advance to ensure they have accessible vehicles.
