For those who don’t know me — hi, I’m Heather, one of the lead teachers for our upcoming Yoga and Meditation Teacher Training and the founder of Ashtanga Yoga Birmingham.
I’ve been teaching Ashtanga for about a decade, mostly in the Mysore room and in treatment centers working with people in recovery from eating disorders and substance use disorders. That range of experience— from dedicated practitioners to people who’d never set foot on a mat before — has shaped just about everything in how I teach.
I trained right here in Birmingham and then spent two years making regular trips to Encinitas to study with Tim Miller, whose approach to teaching has had a lasting influence on my own. I’ve led retreats in Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Mexico, and I’m still very much a student myself —actively seeking out teachers who push me and expand my understanding of yoga.
What draws me to the Mysore method is that it centers the student. You’re not trying to keep up with a class or match someone else’s version of the pose. The practice meets you where you are. That philosophy carries into everything I do, including how I’m approaching this training. I care a lot about discipline and consistency, and equally about staying approachable about it.
