Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it deserves care, attention, and open conversation. This month is a reminder to check in with yourself, reach out to others, and know that support is always available.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to take a step toward feeling better. Small actions like resting, talking, setting boundaries, or simply pausing can make a real difference.

Scrolling, notifications, and late-night screen time can quietly disrupt your sleep. The light and stimulation from phones, tablets, and TVs can make it harder for your brain to wind down and fall asleep. Powering down your devices an hour before bedtime can help your body recognize it’s time to rest.

Have you ever wanted to measure the intensity of your workouts? Monitoring your heart rate can help you do that. Heart rate zones are essentially an indication of how hard your heart works to pump blood and keep up with the demands of your activity.

There are five heart rate zones, ranked 1 to 5. Each zone is based on a percentage of your maximum heart rate during exercise. This number varies from person to person based on age, fitness level and other factors.

Click the link to learn how to calculate your maximum heart rate and more about the heart rate zones.

How hard was your last workout? Knowing and understanding your heart rate zones can help you answer that question. Our exercise physiologist explains.

May is American Stroke Month.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. Stroke is the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. Stroke can happen to anyone — any age, any time — and everyone needs to know the warning signs. Remember to be F.A.S.T in recognizing the signs of stroke.

Approximately 80% of strokes are preventable by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing health conditions that can increase risk of stroke.

Along with fiber, beans are high in many nutrients and have been shown to help lower cholesterol, improve blood sugar management, prevent constipation, protect against colon cancer and aid in weight management. Choose no-salt-added or low-sodium options, and rinse them well to reduce excess sodium. Incorporate more beans into your diet with this bean salad recipe!

Did you know that muscle mass and strength are the strongest predictors of longevity and healthy aging?

To maintain and grow muscle, incorporate at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities per week. Simple ways to build muscle include:
🔸Strength training (weights, machines, resistance bands or bodyweight)
🔸Prioritizing protein in your meals
🔸Staying consistent with training (2–4x per week)
🔸Focusing on good form over heavy weight
🔸Getting enough rest and recovery
