One of the hardest decisions our clients make is the one to enter therapy. Why? Because there is generally shame attached to the need for therapy. And then, once they start therapy, there is so much to disclose and often the most “shameful” things remain undisclosed. At least at first. Most clinicians know that shame is a clinical issue. But shame can also be an identity. It can be a choice-maker. It can be and often is the source of many of the other issues, such as depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, relationship issues. Some research is even recognizing the shame involved in PTSD. Shame can be the toxic foundation for the entirety of life experience. This workshop is meant to offer an in-depth exploration of shame, its impact on our clients, and some tools for facilitating the healing of shame.
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Define shame as the basic core I AM of self-definition.
Define some core beliefs of shame.
Define the necessity of assessing for shame and recognizing the verbal and nonverbal cues.
Define some of the typical ways our clients try to compensate for shame.
Explain what can happen with the therapist’s shame.
Understand and be able to utilize some interventions to facilitate healing for shame.
REGISTER before 5 pm, Wednesday 7/9/25 AT: http://www.andreamathews.com/events.html
