May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month 💚

At our clinic, we see firsthand how Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses can impact every aspect of a person’s life—often in ways that aren’t immediately visible.

Lyme disease is frequently misunderstood:
• Not everyone develops a bullseye rash
• Early symptoms can feel like the flu—fatigue, fever, headaches, joint pain
• Testing isn’t always reliable in the early stages
• Ticks can carry multiple infections, not just Lyme

If you’re spending time outdoors this season, remember to protect yourself:
✔️ Use tick repellent
✔️ Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing
✔️ Check for ticks after being outside
✔️ Remove ticks promptly and shower after outdoor exposure

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and seek care. Early recognition matters.

To those navigating Lyme disease—especially if you’ve struggled to be heard or diagnosed—you are not alone. We’re here to listen, to treat, and to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Many people think tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever don’t happen in Alabama, but that’s not true.

After a recent hunting trip, Alabama Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth shared how a tick bite he initially ignored led to a serious case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever weeks later.

Symptoms can take time to appear and may include fever, cough, nausea, and more—and without prompt treatment, it can become life-threatening.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick or feel off after time outdoors, don’t ignore it. Early care matters.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect at this year’s IMA conference. Being surrounded by like-minded practitioners who are advancing new perspectives in integrative medicine and exploring emerging science is both inspiring and energizing.

These are the conversations that move healthcare forward—rooted in curiosity, innovation, and a commitment to treating the whole person. Excited to bring these insights back to the clinic and continue serving with a broader, more informed perspective.

There’s nothing like connecting in person with friends, new and old. For so many, IMA feels like home.

“We're so proud of LymeLight Grant Recipient, Sam Sofio, for sharing his story on 2 News and using his voice to help others suffering.
‘I don’t remember a tick bite,' he says. 'I don’t remember seeing any bullseye.' But he does remember the moment back in 2020 when everything changed’

As a Cedarville University junior, he went from living a normal college life to dealing with crushing fatigue, intense pain, and symptoms that made it hard to even sit through class. His family spent years (and their savings) searching for answers through tests, specialists, and misdiagnoses. His Lyme test came back negative. But his symptoms were very real.

Eventually, Sam found a doctor who believed him and was willing to treat him. Today, he’s back in school and holding onto hope for full recovery. He was also recently at the US Health and Human Services Lyme disease Roundtable!

Lyme disease doesn’t always look the way we expect. And negative tests don’t mean nothing is wrong.”

What happens when two misunderstood chronic illnesses collide? Today, Summer sits down with Lyme expert and nurse practitioner Carrye Hodges, who shares her powerful story of being dismissed by doctors for years before finally receiving a Lyme diagnosis. Together, they break down the striking similarities between Lyme disease and Long COVID, why standard testing so often fails patients, and how true healing requires listening, deep investigation, and collaboration.

Did you know excessive thirst can be an overlooked symptom of Lyme disease?

A recent patient story highlights how persistent thirst—paired with unexplained low blood sugar, fatigue, headaches, and other systemic symptoms—was repeatedly dismissed for years. Despite drinking up to 20 glasses of water a day, she was told to “drink less” or try hard candies, while the true cause went unrecognized.

It wasn’t until she finally saw a Lyme-literate provider that the pieces came together: multiple tick-borne infections had been impacting her thyroid and adrenal function, driving her extreme thirst and other symptoms. With appropriate treatment and support for underlying imbalances, her thirst slowly normalized, especially once she incorporated electrolytes and stabilized her blood sugar.

Excessive thirst can signal many possible root causes, including tick-borne illness. If your symptoms don’t fit neatly into a box, keep advocating for answers. Your body’s signals matter, and you know when something isn’t right.
