After three decades of transformative leadership, our trailblazing CEO, Kathie M. Hiers, has announced her retirement.

Since 1997, Kathie has been a tireless force in the fight against HIV/AIDS, building AIDS Alabama into a national model of comprehensive care and housing innovation. Her leadership has changed federal policy, secured vital resources for the Deep South, and ensured thousands of Alabamians have access to the dignity, healthcare, and hope they deserve.

"I have spent my career fighting for one simple truth: that every person living with HIV deserves dignity, housing, healthcare, and hope," said Kathie. "While I'm stepping away from daily leadership, I carry with me profound gratitude for every person who trusted AIDS Alabama with their care."

Please join us in celebrating Kathie's incredible legacy. The board has begun a national search for our next leader, and we are confident in the bright future ahead.

Today, on World AIDS Day, we come together to honor and remember those we’ve lost to AIDS-related illnesses and to stand in solidarity with everyone living with HIV.

Since the first World AIDS Day in 1988, we have made incredible progress, but HIV is still with us and our work is far from over.

Today, more tools than ever help prevent HIV transmission, including PrEP, condoms, and the power of Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). Testing is easier and treatment is more accessible. Yet too many communities still face barriers to prevention, care, and support.

And while science has advanced, stigma remains. Stigma keeps people from getting the services they need and deserves no place in our communities.

To truly end HIV, everyone must be included, with no exceptions and no one left behind.

On this World AIDS Day, we remember those we have lost, acknowledge how far we have come, and recommit to the work ahead. At AIDS Alabama, we stand with every community to ensure that everyone is supported, informed, and empowered.

The only way to know your status is to get tested. We offer free HIV testing at our Living Well Health Clinic located here inside our Prevention building at El Centro/The Hub:Birmingham.

We are in this together. ❤️🕊️
